Bucking the trend, has anyone ever gone back in years?!

Just something I have been mulling over for a while now. ( probably age related!)

I currently have a 2013 lc and am not really seeing the benefits in shelling out more dough for newer versions, especially as mine only has 22000kms on the engine.

What is really grabbing my attention is reverting to a R1150GSA. I never had one, love the old school looks and I reckon you'd be the one turning heads these days. Not to mention reliability, fixability and future classic status.

So, has anyone ever gone the other way??!

I went from a aircooled 1200 GSA 10 years ago, back to a 1150 GSA again and have run 1150 GSA's for last 10 years

They suit me, but maybe not you

I am not interested in speed and forward thrust, on a GS...................others are

However a 1150 with decent aftermarket suspension, handles well and can surprise some others on newer bikes

Another mid or later life crisis kicking in, have you had your bike from new, any problems with it..............;)

Yeh maybe but lets just say early midlife

No got it at 13000kms and not a bother on her. I guess i might be looking for the bmw version of how to stand out a little. Mind you, not many about!

haha well their was a few lovely ones for sale on here not so long ago, but why change if all is good, you never know how the other bike has been kept, it might be shiny on the outside, however I do know that feeling, and try to overcome it, you will be happier when spring comes, and you can get out to ride again, if you do not ride in winter.

I had a really nice early 1200GS, now have a really nice R1150GS.

I am much happier with my choice. The 1200 was good, but didn't have the character and feel of the 1150.

Yep, 1150 GSA is a less common sight out on the roads (every fucker has a GS WC) and IMHO is a great bike to ride

I did have a ride on a 2018MY 1200 GSA, with TFT a few months ago and on familiar roads it all a bit techno starship for me and in essence spoilt the actual riding experience

Plus I found the auto ESA poor and choppy, compared to Ohlins on my bike (ESA are cheap shocks with a bit of electric wizardry tacked on)

I ride/commute all year through. I guess thats why I justify to myself if im to have only one bike its got to be one im totally smitten with. Last one I had like that was my rally raid 690 r...till it broke!!!

Just so we don't confuse anyone.....

Yes a 1200 will have more power, but I'm not sure 'asthmatic' gives the right message. My 1100 took me and my (large!) nephew plus full camping kit across Spain in a day sitting at 90mph all the way, with the greatest ease and with power in reserve. My 1150 after that was faster...

They're not rocket ships, but personally I never wanted for more power.

1150 = asthmatic at best

the LC is a breath of fresh air

Weird innit....thankfully; as most seek extra horsepower on ever more congested roads, littered with cameras (here and abroad) I've dropped to sub 100 hp on the Africa twin (and 85 hp on the 1150) and am happy as a pig in shit on it. Somehow manage to keep up with the group I ride with but again, none of them are seeking the big HP gains.
Not against tech or moving things forward but can't help thinking that 160hp plus Adv bikes are just another nail in the coffin of motorcycling.

Yup, agree with that thought.

I took a trip back and bought an XT500 , soon after I realised that it was not the same as I remembered it still looked good , sounded good , turned heads but god it was awful in the reality of riding a bike , so as time moves forward so do the expectations of owners.
I'm not saying that old bikes are bad , but for some a move forward in technology makes the task more fun and the rewards out weight the nostalgia. I would ride the 1150 again but I feel I would like to leave it where it is , in the past.
All the above is IMHO of course , all to our own.

spot on.. I loved CB900's and had a few, and a CB100RC... they were the best and my memory of them made me have a go on one a few months ago... OMG, I was so disapointed in the weight, speed, handling, brakes and the rest.. Guess these things were good at the time, but as time moves on and we embrase the new tech, going back is not always a good idea :)

The 1150 was perhaps the best 'bike BMW ever made, except for the 2007 Xcountry :rob

It's not all about BHP though:D

Very true JB ... it's not what you ride :D

(Yes, it's cringe time again folks)
