Hey Tossers

Nothing like last minute vague planning - anyone else off to the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest on 24-26 July?

I'm off on the bike (1200 GS Adv 2007) and departing from Dover 4pm on Tue 21 Jul then (sporty) ride from Dunkirk, across Belgium, down through Nuremberg, Vienna and into Budapest for late-pm on Thu 23 to pick up SWMBO from the airport. The return leg is even more vague, but heading back on Mon 27 Jul via Croatia (Plitvice Lakes), Venice, Stelvio Pass and then 'head North' to get to Dunkirk ferry by 4pm on Sat 1 Aug from there!

Drop me a line if you're in vaguely the same neck of the woods and fancy a beer and chat or assistance!

Happy riding

Hi Mark,

As you know I will be heading back to UK as you head out but just wanted to give you the benefit of my extensive (sic) experience having ridden to Budapest just last week.

That's a tight schedule, I wasn't in a hurry and took 4 days to reach Budapest, but they were long days. Not saying it can't be done, but expect a sore butt. :-).

Don't forget your vignette for the Hungarian autoroutes, I paid €6.10 for 10 days, that's the cheapest they do. Got mine just before Hungarian border, but there are plenty of places displaying 'Matrica Vignette' you can buy them.

Get some Hungarian forints, lots of places accept euros, but many don't and in any case you'll lose on the exchange rate.

Apologies if you know all this, but maybe someone else can find it useful.

PS. Just looked up Plitvice lakes, looks amazing. I am currently heading to Belgrade then will head for Plitvice. Thanks for the info.

Regards,

Cheers Patrick, yep you're right its a tight schedule but I'll be solo for the outbound leg so should be able to crack on a bit - fingers crossed no technical issues (I had to change my tyres yesterday!!). Thanks for the other bits of info, I hadn't thought about the Vignette and assumed Euro would be universally accepted - maybe I should buy a travellers guide!!!
I've booked me and Lou into the Plitvice Ethno House in Jezerce, Croatia - seems comfortable enough for £66 (pool, bar and wifi etc - although we have to pay in local currency - doh!).
Enjoy the rest of your trip, we need to get Wrong Direction back together!
Cheers
Mark

Your planning sounds about as thorough as mine was. :-).

Cheers, that gives me somewhere to head for.

Btw. It's HOT, saw 39° yesterday though slightly further south than Budapest, and I can't remember Morocco feeling this hot.

Have a great trip.
