Has anyone used these DARR aluminium panniers? At 89.95euros for the 36litre and 98.95euros for the 41litre boxes, they seem almost too good to be true.

That price is just for the box, though. Price up the mounting kit & brackets, etc & the pice goes up quite a lot. You need H&B mounts, or similar & they don't do them with exhaust cut-outs which limits you to an asymetrical set-up.

They do look the part though & are certainly cheaper than the others I know of.......

Paul,
I had a look at these a month or so ago, but because the site is in German, it wasn't totally clear to me what was needed to make a complete set with mountings.
I did send them an email (in English) and they replied, saying that I should look at their web site. (helpfull)
I did like the look of the boxes and would be keen to know if anyone has used them and how they have mounted them.
One problem would be, that they don't have a UK outlet.

Mike.

Presumably they could be mounted on standard BMW pannier frames using the Touratech Mounting Kit 053-0010 at £34.71. Having said that, I had the opportunity to examine some Touratech mounting frames at the weekend and these are certainly more substantial than the BMW ones. Mind you at £167.77, they damned well should be.

I may well wait until the BMF Show at Peterborough and to have a look at other people's bikes before I make a decision.

The Jesse panniers look the best, seem the strongest and are the most expensive. The Metal Mule look boxy but easily repairable and their quick release system is good. Touratech at £144.63 each maybe doesn't sound so bad after all. Decisions, decisions....

This is a may 04 price from what I can gather.
I found an on line translation site ( free ) and got this from the link page.

Has anyone had a go at making their own alloy panniers? I wonder if it's worth enrolling at Night School to practise MIG welding and use their folding machine? 2mm aluminium sheet, cut out shape, cut with snips, fold, weld, done. No, I can't be that easy or everyone would have done it. ;-)

Vern has :D I'm afraid you pay for the skills learnt though.
If you want to go your own way and cheap look out for something already manufactured that you can lobotomise - jerry cans, ammo boxes etc etc army surplus, or it's bite the bullet time
Think learning alu welding might not be the quickest way forward
I've just bitten :fiddle
