Looking for replacement textile clothing for Spada kit I bought last Oct. Have learnt that clothing with drop waterproof liners don't really cut it for all year round commuting use. Outers absorb the water and the drop liners aren't very durable. So I recon a goretex outer or similar is the way forward. I'm on a tight(ish) budget as always so there seems to be plenty of manufacturers from outlets like J&S that suit the bill. I'd like to get jacket and trousers for < £400. Any recommendations?

From your description is sound like you're looking for Gore-Tex Pro Shell gear. This doesn't come in a budget version unless you buy used. There are relative bargains to be had on eBay on Hein Gericke Master V suits. Rukka and any other manufacturers tend to be a bit more expensive. Gore-Tex Pro Shell is at the expensive end of textile suits.

As you have found, buying cheap clothing can be a false economy. As said above, you can pick up used gear from top of the range Hein Gericke, Rukka etc which can be great value. I bought a used Rukka suit on this forum which I use in the winter.

Of the cheaper makes, the Weise gear seems to get good reports from a couple of friends and I might consider this when my summer jacket wears out (Hein Gericke CRuise mk3 which has been in use since 2005) http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_cat/236

IMHO you haven't got a chance of getting a truly waterproof suit that won't wet-out after a few months at that price. The best budget solution is a comfortable, warm textile suit and a decent over-suit for when it chucks it down.

There's a reason Pro-Shell is expensive...
