Now this may just be a coincidence but bare with me...

I updated my Nav V firmware to version 3.1 when it came out some weeks ago. All appeared well... :)

Yesterday I put my BMW Navigator V into the gps holder on my R1200r. This holder is the BMW one with 4 buttons down the side ( for zoom in/out, page turn, sound).

Now when I went to use these buttons on side of gps holder to control the gps they did not work (although the unit was still being charged). First thoughts were that the buttons on the holder were kaput but thought I'd :eek:would also do hard reset of Nav just in case it was some thing to do with that. This made no difference so off I trot to Jefferies (who after some negotiation were kind enough to fit me in at short notice). They also found the gps holder buttons did not work and so were going to order a new replacement holder.

However before leaving they also tried a brand new Nav V in the holder and guess what- buttons now work and everything back to normal. So they gave me the new Nav V as a warranty exchange and I left the old one with them. :beerjug:

So now my dilemma. This new Nav V has firmware v 3.0 on it-. so do I update this to 3.1 or leave it as it is as I'm not sure if it would be exchanged out again if the issue really does relate to a bug in the firmware of 3.1. :nenau

So my question is: Has anyone else updated their Nav V to firmware 3.1 and used it successfully in the BMW Nav V cradle that has the buttons down the side?

Thanks

Going to reply with the answer to my question...

When I went to update the maps to the latest version this morning on my replacement gps the Nav V automatically updated to v3.1 as part of the map installation with no option not to update the firmware so ended up with the latest release. Happy to confirm that the holder buttons still work with 3.1. It would therefore seem the previous Nav V was faulty rather than a 'bug' issue.

Happy all sorted but surprised other Nav unit died so early in its relatively gentle life.

Software (embedded firmware) has become so complex that it is often strewn with bugs that crop up under certain conditions that are very difficult to repeat or even understand - there is no great commercial incentive for the bugs to be sought out and fixed either, most manufacturers use their customers to find them because it's cheaper that way.

The end result of is that one can often waste huge amounts of time faffing about trying to get the damn stuff to work as one expects - I have been involved in electronics and this stuff for more than 40 years but life is just too short now so I have mostly reverted to simpler technology e.g. Maps :) My Nav V is mainly used as an accurate speedometer and compass these days, although I don't completely trust those functions either:)
