I have been inputting my VIN No. into parts websites and it comes back as a December 99 build.....I thought they had stopped building the 1100GS by then

Mine was first registered in November 2000, supposedly built december 1999.

Production formally ceased in december 1999. The final 200 were the 'granada dakar' special editions of which 37 made it 'officially' to the UK.
my R100/7 sidecar tug build date was Feb 78

Same here..ours was originally registered late '99 in Germany.. hence the year related plate.
My Granada/Dakar 1100 was built in April 99 and I brought it in July 1999, the 1150 was launched in August 1999 and was £750 cheaper than the 1100

Thats very strange this means that BMW continued to produce the 1100 for 4 months. while also producing the 1150??? - two seperate production lines??
The micapeak site states In August 1999 the final R11GS rolled off the production line in Spandau, Berlin and In September 1999 (i.e. the start of Production year 2000) the R1150GS began its production run
However - My own bike was originally a G-D made in December 99. And had to be imported from germany in March of 2000 as there were none left 'new' in UK showrooms.. or rather the BMW dealership that dealt with the bikes original buyer couldn't source one for him.

BMW carried on making the 850 for several years after the 1100 so there was obviously a separate production run for the older style machines as well as the 1150.
I would imagine that they all come down the same line, it adds interest for the assembly line staff and keeps them on their toes.

Mine's at the other end of the scale - one of the first 94's into the country. Its first keeper was Park Lane BMW who had it for 12 months. They did some tweaks during their ownership though as it has the later Arkont raw alloy rims rather than the chrome ones fitted to the first bikes and has a few other little non-standard fitments (detailed on the receipts I got when I bought it). It's second keeper bought it fitted with some God awful bright red Givi panniers and top box to match the red tank (very 90's 
) - still fitted when I got it 14 years later.

On metal castings, these are often a circular recess with an arrow in the centre. On one side is the month and the other is the year of build (of that part).
Plastics sometimes use the same markings but more often these days have a grid with 00 to 09 for the year of the decade and twelve rows for the months. The last dot will show the month and year of the pressing.
There will be some variation between the dates, particularly with smaller plastic items that are easier to produce in large batches and easier to store in bulk.
The only time to worry is when the date of first registration is before the aggregate age of the major components. Even then, there may be innocent reasons for this.
DVLA "date of manufacture" can be misleading because they list everything as December of the year before date of first registration (just a quirk of their system).
