Having had a mis-hap with that Vario cases and discovering their limitations, breaking both a bracket off the bike and a lug off one of the cases, i have just fitted a set on Aluminium panniers from Adventure Bike Warehouse. I had been looking for a while when i saw them in the LC section, i called Cliff at Adventure Bike Warehouse and they had a set in stock £600.00 for everything i needed to fit them on the bike. Ordered Friday, dispatched Monday, arrived and fitted Tuesday!!.

First impressions, well, i regret wasting my cash on the Vario's, they are expensive for plastic boxes £560.00 if you have to buy the hangers as well, i did like the fact that my helmet would fit in that Vario once extended, but that's a high price to pay for a helmet holder. These are very robust, a good size, far more practical and more usable space than the Vario's, they come with a tool box, and to top it off - look good on the bike, fitting was straightforward and the kit included a pair of "Indicator Extension Brackets" that move the indicators back about 60mm so that they are level with the rear of the boxes.

It was a bit fiddly fitting the indicator extensions, and i accidentally snipped a wire to one of them that i then had to repair, so be careful, the wires are just long enough to fit the extensions, but they look good when they are done.

The fittings are all made of aluminium, and well made too, there are two sets of split blocks that fit to each side, one around the trellis frame where the plastic block on the Vario's fit, the other around the rear footage hanger, i decided to put a band of tape around the area these fitted to, just to protect the paint when the brackets were tightened up.

The locks are sturdy, the bottom of the case is 4mm, it has been dropped inside the case, sealed and riveted in place, the box has a bevel on the bottom edge so it sit's into that bevel adding plenty of strength, the top looks watertight with a rubber seal, and the hinges are quite meaty.

Hanger frames are solid when fixed, as well as the fixings to the foot peg hanger, the frame and the original hanger fixing point under the luggage rack, there are two bars passing from one side to the other locking the two frames together, one behind the number plate, and another bolts up through the upper mud guard using the bolt holes that fed the tail light unit to the frame (two aluminium spacers are provided) Thats It... few pictures..

The Burmot's are 45ltr and 41ltr, plus the tool box and 94cm wide on the bike (according to the advert but i haven't dropped the tape on them, i'll do that tomorrow!!), the handlebars are also 94cm inc the mirrors, so the same as the boxes which is good. I think all metal cases look wider because they are deeper, and have a greater presence on the bike, i was surprised when i found out these are (as per advert - tape test tomorrow) narrower than Varios!! - I did drop the tape on the Vario's before i bought these to help me decide on the size i wanted, i was concerned about the width, there was a smaller set on the website (40 and 36ltr), but as it happened they only had this set in stock to fit my bike.

Extended the Vario's were 97cm so well over an inch wider than these, and wider than the handlebars, and they have a capacity of 30ltr and 35ltr. The Burmots win hands down for me, much more capacity 86 against 65ltr's!!, they are narrower than extended various, (which as we all know is the only way to get anything in them), better looks, the cost is comparable, they are a lot stronger and i now have a tool box too :), i,m not anti Vario now, but i have learnt something.., Ive seen sets at twice the cost of Burmots, seeing them in the flesh i can't imagine that other cases can be twice as good... i would have no bother recommending these, especially so if The Adventure Bike Shop are still doing a deal.

Very interesting, and a good price too. The frames look to be a lot better than the 'garden shed' nature of the MetalMules (my only gripe about them)

Take of tha tape: they measured at 97cm wide the same as the extended Vario cases, handle bar hand guards measured 98cm wide so that's the guide for squeezing through traffic

Yes Matt, heres the site, he said he,s getting a delivery this month but i think i had the last set for the Hex from stock.

http://www.adventurebikeshop.co.uk/brand-manufacturer/Bumot?product_id=488 :beerjug:

Yep that was the last set in stock for the 04 - 12 1200GS, new stock arriving next week with the new quick realease mounting system, I will post a picture of the locking mechanism and also the new colour that has been added, its called Frozen Grey.

I do have a couple of sets to fit the 1200GS-LC in stock with the same mounting system as haditlowered These will also be available at £600 from next week once i get some more frames delivered

I looked at these as a possible alternative for my S10. In the end I discarded the idea as they are too square, no angled lower front section to protect your leg if you are paddling through mud and the outside lower edges are also square meaning that they either have to be mounted higher to give cornering clearance or run the risk of grounding them and possibly having an "off".

In the end I persuaded Vern to make a set of fittings to put my Worldbeaters on the Yam. 10" boxes 95cm width but that included a slight mod to the standard exhaust and hacking a piece off the plastic heat shield.

So they can be compared to the OEM GSA cases...
What are the Bumot case dimensions and how high are the case tops to compared to the pillion underseat (rack)?

Vern is about the only one out there making panniers that understands the risk of a leg break from trapping your leg with the pannier, Vern got the idea by copying the old Jesse Luggage Odyssey panniers, The Jesse's are much better quality but also twice the price once imported from the States. I do understand why all the other ally pannier manufacturers make there panniers with even square ish edges, its easier to produce and they can fit on both side instead of being handed

If you get the pannier down when cornering you will already be well on your way to an OFF, by the time the Bumots touch down you will already be well past the footpegs scraping

Yes but they are not as wide as the GSA alu cases by about 50mm, height wise that do sit above the pillion underseat plate like most other panniers

Am i missing something, lower edges (ie: the bottom) is angled on all four sides. ;)
They are meaning the front edge directly behind your feet.
If straight or small champfer if your leg is kicked up when riding it can beak your leg.
Part of the reason why some prefer soft luggage for rough trips.
