My R1100GS has developed a bump in the petrol tank folowing an encounter with an Alfa Romeo. Does anyone know whom/where can be repaired?
Cheers, Yosi

Hi Yosi

Motorworks had a mint looking second hand red one at the BMF for £120. Might be an option if it's still available..

Good luck.

Yosi,

Check your Yellow pages for "Chips-Away"

Do a fair job at the right price.;)

Hi Yosi - hope you 'won' the war!

Also try 'Dent Devils' - these are the guys who take the small dents from car panels and save you having to fill it/spray it. About £25.00 per dent I think.

Yosi, I just put a small dent in my tank during some greenlaning last weekend. I attempted to fix the dent myself but cocked it up a wee bit.

Once I removed the filler neck, I found that the gap down the side of the tank (Adventure) is very narrow. I used a steel re-inforcing bar that was only an inch in diameter to "pop" the dent out. Where I "popped" the dent out, little paintwork blemishes have now appeared where the bar was pushing on the dent from inside of the tank. If I had used a wider bar ( like a long tyre iron ), I reckon I would've got away with it.

If you do get your tank repaired, please put a post how & where. I feel I may be giving them a call too...

P.S:- maybe we can get a discount for 2 tanks? :)

i take it you never saw the episode of father ted where he tried to get a minute ding out of the bishops rover then? :D

Sucker

Yosi, depending on the size of the dent they can be "Sucked" out with a purpose made dent puller, about £6.00 from motor shops, looks like a giant rubber sucker with big steel handles on.

Dent...

Thanks to all. I think I'll try the "sucker", if not, I'll try the profesionals. The thing is, my tank is the 75th anniv. colors and I'll hate to damage the painting....

Just to think I had one of those Baglux nappies... may have save the day.

And the Alfa?

Well, the cilinder pot made a serius indentation on the front door, the momentum carried the pot forward were the door meet the pillar which opened like a sardines can...
No a pretty sight...

As for Jeronimo. beside the small dent, niente, nada, gurnish...

REAL dents!

ah, obviously we're talking slightly smaller dents than the one i acquired on rudland rigg, n yorks last weekend...

i'm sure jez will furnish the site with the evidence.

jez: "that'll be expensive"
dave: " no it won't; i shan't bother repairing it..."

I just took my tank off for an unrelated problem today. When it was off, I spotted a massive round plate on the underside of the tank. This must be where the fuel pump and filter live. It is exactly opposite where my dent was and if only I had discovered it a few days ago, I could have easily removed the plate & pushed my pesky dent out.

I've bitten the bullet and booked my tank in for repair with these guys:

http://www.finishlinemc.co.uk/index.htm

They are quoting £ 120.00 + vat. For that I get my dent repaired and the whole tank re-sprayed in original BMW Titan Silver. I drop the tank off at their place and pick it up 4 days later. I'll put a post on how it turned out, when it's back with me.

I also found some usefull links for bike repairs / spray painting on this web page:

BMW R1150 GS Fuel Tank,
One Excellent condition low mileage (less than 1000miles) Fuel tank for a late 2002 R1150 GS BMW

The tank is finished In the pacific Blue and Alpine white 2002 - 2003 colour scheme. Logos and stickers as per photo

Please Note There is a Filler cap(but no lock barrel, allen screws or gaskets) also there is no fuel pump assembly just a "nearly perfect" GS fuel tank. There is a very very slight mark, less than 1 cm X 1cm in the lacquer just in front of the filler cap in the lacquer, it looks like someone leaned on an M8 bolt and 3 threads lightly marked the lacquer?

There are No Other marks or damage,

Don't be tempted to buy an 1150 tank and put it on an 1100. I've just gone through all of that. Doh!

- but surely with an 1150 tank on an 1100 , you can then buy an 1150 beak - meaning they'll line up at the tank meeting face.

Then its just a small matter of fettling in the screen ? - surely ?

- or am i missing s'thing ?

Tank compatibility

I don't understand the problem you've had, Rob.

Some of you may remember my attempts to modify (read smash to a pulp) my 1150's tank while trail riding at Llangollen last year. I replaced it with a S/H 1100 tank from Motorworks which I had resprayed and just swapped the filler & pump gubbins from the old one. It's still on the bike now although I just got a nice black Adventure tank delivered this morning

I had absolutely no problems with compatibility but the spray shop have had problems with refitting tanks which have been repaired as the lobes tend to "spread" apart. They now have a jig for GS tanks to reform them to the correct shape.

Paul I thought that the major difference between the tanks was the rubbers at the front being different from the 94 - 96 then 97 - 2000, 1100 machines with the latest 1150 and Adventure using another slightly different set of rubbers up front.

Can you, having all three types of tanks, verify that?

Mick.

My bikes is a 95 model - with the plastic tank. The 1150 tank actually overlaps the the original rubbers. I cannot see how fitting new rubbers would make it fit

Phil, I like my bike looking like an 1100 so I didn't want to fit an 1150 beak.
