Hi,

Just moved house and rang up to change the address on my GSA insurance which I've always held with BuMW. Very helpful but the cheeky chappies charged me a £20 admin charge for it! Asked him if it was a case of if I didn't pay it did that mean I wasn't covered on insurance. He said yup - thats the way of life nowadays!!!! :forry

Still got 6 months to run on it so paid up but last time I'll take out BuMW insurance.

I'm going to look around but any recommendations on who's good for full comp insurance on an 08 1200 GSA which gives similar cover?

cheers

Nick

P.S. - MODS - Apologies if I put this in the wrong place but I couldn't find a section to put it in. Please move if I've offended anyone.

Swinton. The best I've found for prices and customer service, especially as they have a local office near me. I now have my bikes, cars and business p/l with them.:)

How long have you been with them?

Last year when I added an extra bike to the policy, the admin charge was ridiculous as it was more than the cost of the insurance amount. I moaned politely .. they waivered it.

Moneysupermarket.com seem to have the best bike comparison giving you loads of results. Bear in mind though that all these insurance comanies are caning the arse out of additional charges these days in the same way that Airlines are and every other b*stard! BuMW are not alone in being cheeky chappies.

Insurance is a cut throat business - so if you can play one off against another.

Where I use dto live there were 2 branches of Swinton within a mile of each other, and all I did was to go in and talk to them, when they found out their competition was another branch, they really got into a price war........ took a trip to other branch, back and forward till I got the price I wanted.

I suspect that with the advent of t'internet it won't be so easy - but worth a try.

Good Luck.

Cheers

That was a bit naughty. the policy (well mine anyway) clearly states it should be £15.

Many if not most charge an admin fee these days though you can sometimes negotiate it away.

ive just changed to Beemer insurance and it works for me - £318 with Carol nash fully comp or £135 with Beemer. No brainer, if I change the details and it costs me £20 I'll still be £163 in pocket :thumb

Been with Adrian Flux for years and at last renewal no one could get anywhere near their quote. Might be worth a visit for you.

yep I was quoted 528 with carole Nash but she managed to reduce it to 415 whereas BMW came in with 318.

I did the Internet thing and loads had huge excesses, no free continental travel etc.

Also these cheap insurance companies are fine until you have to claim.

See t'internet, bike, ride, mcn for alternatives. I ring round every year and always get a healthy discount vs my renewal. Underwriter always seems to be Equity Redstar for me irrespective of the broker used.

Check the T&Cs and go with the cheapest.

I think I might have some kind of record here... glad I changed to e-bike and didn't take equity redstar up on their quote :D

Changing insurance as an objection to the admin fee, will leave you uninsured eventualy, as most companies do this. It's how there able to keep solvent while offering cut price insurance.

I jusy got my renewal through and I'm pleased to say its only £107.79 FC, one bonus for being 40 i suppose.

i just got a quote from Tesco..... £238 comp with 4 years NCD and im 34. My insurer wants to charge me nearly £500. shop about for the best deals.

Try Devit, I got my 11GS and my Harley on a dual bike policy for 130 fully comp, with a £100 excess

Insurance isn't only about PRICE

Motor Insurance is about the scope of cover provided and when you need it.............is the cover worth the paper that it is written or not

A few people have found that with certain internet based insurance brokers:augie

As others have said, most insurers charge an admin fee for any changes to the policy. What you have to bear in mind is should you be unfortunate to have an accident how good is your insurer at paying out. Eventually they all will (providing you are eligible for payout) but some take a damned sight longer than others. Just because an insurer is cheap doesn't necessarily mean they will drag their feet at paying out, I tend to go on reputation from other users before deciding who to go with.

As it happens BMW insurance, with NIG, just happens to be the cheapest for me, but I also know from personal experience that they are very good at paying out. Three years ago I had a 'no fault' accident which wrote my 5 week old K1200S off. There wasn't much NIG could do until I got out of hospital and was in a position to make a claim, nearly 2 weeks later, but once done they promptly sent an inspector to look at the bike. He phoned me the same day and negotiated a payout (to within £400 of the invoice price, I could have had a replacement bike but I wouldn't be fit enough to ride for over a year, and I had Gap insurance to cover the difference and excess), payment was received within the week. My claim for £500 worth of biking gear was dealt with as quickly. The third party insurer (HSBC fleet insurance) were not as good, they didn't settle with NIG until 3 years later . The included 'No Claims' protection ensured my premiums weren't hiked up until the claim was settled with the third party. Within 24 hours of notifying NIG about the accident they phoned to ask if I wanted a hire bike (some have to be pursued for this) and again, a few days later, just to make sure I didn't. Because of this I have stayed with BMW insurance and, specifically, NIG, it just so happens they are also still the cheapest for me ;).

Zurich are also good payers. My house and contents insurance is with them and they covered all the items that weren't covered by NIG, who only cover up to £500 of protective clothing. Zurich paid out for (or replaced) the remaining clothing, my missing watch (Rado) and PDA (being used as a sat nav), and the tank bag. Over 2 grands worth in total. Zurich are not the cheapest around but they pay out when required, and on items not normally covered by others.
