Buy or Wait?

Allen Jefferies have several pre-registered R1200GS's in stock, all with ABS, white lenses, computer and heated grips. Price is list -£750 or my 2006 K1200S + £2000.

Decisions, decisions

Went for a test ride yesterday on the 2007 - and it got a big thumbs up from Mrs SPL for comfort, which is a major consideration.

She says it's more comfortable than the K1200S, and was secretly hoping that I'd get off and say I enjoyed the GS, as she'd rather be on the back of that next year than the K :blast

I must admit that the engine, which I found boring when I tried one in 2004, is now "very relaxing and deceptively fast".

Don't know if it has improved, or if I've just matured :rob (I suspect a bit of both).

Anyway, I think the 2008 is going to have to be a huge improvement to justify the price premium - and I suspect that the 2007 is a better bet for me.

Just need to find the best deal I can, and that's me sorted. :thumb

Cue loads of threads from me asking further questions about must have options and improvements :o

Just done the deed

I agree with you SPL the current gs represents great value - yesterday I did the deal. I bought a brand new (not pre-registered) black 1200gs fully kitted, ABS, grips, chrome exhaust, white lenses, panniers, computer, 12 months tax, full tank of fuel & delivery for £9825 :clap.

I think that represents a fantastic deal from, Wollaston BMW, Northampton incidently - well chuffed :thumb. I can`t fault them, Matthew was a great guy to deal with. Just can`t wait for it to arrive.

So in my opinion SPL - go for it and bag yourself a bargain.

Heres hoping for a dry mild winter.

I thought Jefferies could do better than that. They just came straight out with £750 off which was way too easy in my book. Williams in Manchester beat them by a decent margin. Give them a try.

I had exactly the same dilemma a month ago. Initially it put me off when I heard about the newer updated version but after the deal I was offered I thought there was no way the new bike could be that much better to justify the price diff.
Well happy with it :thumb

Sounds like some dealers are trying a lot harder than others

I want a Non ABS, with Heated Grips, Chrome exhausts, Computer, and white lenses - list for this spec is £9,510.

I am also thinking of adding crash protection and luggage.

I've had one reply so far, and they offered me £215 off list for the bike, and nothing off the extras

That's just taking the piss - not a good deal under any circumstances, and especially on a bike that is about to be superceded :spitfire

What deal did you get Hawk - if you don't mind me asking?

If I'm going to end up saving several £100, I'm quite happy to travel to pick the bike up...

Spec

To get the best price you might have to e flexible on the spec. that you want. If they have to order it to meet you exact spec. then you are much less likely to get a deal than by taking a bike that is available.

The problem with that appears to be that most GS's available on this basis will have ABS. If the dealer is worth anything he'll work through the options with you.

Dealers will hold onto the price if they can, evey £ 100 they give you in discount comes directly out of their pocket, is not as if BMW will share the discount so be prepared to earn any discount that you want. Go to several dealers, tell them that you will be buying and work the price hard. If they think you are serious and not kicking tyres in my experience there is always a deal to be done.

Cheers
Chris

must be awful..all these people having to have the latest 'must haves'...not being able to sleep, because the 'jones' might have a newer model.

its one of the things i find really sad in this world.

My neighbour is not called 'jones' so I can buy any old crap.

Neither's the bloke next door to me - I just threw open the question and asked for some opinions.

Tried to ignore the jibe before, and just focus on the useful advice offered, as it seemed a bit odd in response to a first post from a new member

1)Sounds like some dealers are trying a lot harder than others

7)If I'm going to end up saving several £100, I'm quite happy to travel to pick the bike up...

1)Don't just try your local dealer. Try ones within a certain travelling time/distance. I thought my two 'local' ones were almost in cahoots about how much they were willing to trade at.
2)Like someone else said, be flexible. Most come with ABS, grips, white lenses and comp. That's my spec.
3)Crash protection can be added at leisure unless you want to try and get a deal on some accessories. You should get 10% off the full vario luggage at the time you buy.
4)Dealers don't like dealing over the telephone or via email.
5)See 4)
6) My spec came in at ~£10250. Initially they wanted to pre-register the bike for £9k but I managed to reg it in my name first. Also 10% off the full luggage :thumb
7)Bear in mind the first service. I don't think your local dealer will be happy to do it if you bought else where.

I chose the 07 because I don't think the 08 will THAT much better. Sure it might? be better but.....you get GSer's on here saying the 1150 is better etc etc, ie it's personal opinion, and we've all got one of those so long as we've got holes in our ar$es :)

Well ... I went out intending to put down a deposit on an '08 R1200GS Adv ... and ended up buying an '07 ... £600 off list (seemed OK to me) which I quickly spent of Touratech protective bits and bobs – like you do :augie

Not what I'd intended to do at all ... but hey! I enjoyed the test ride so am very happy to have one of these in white aluminium metallic. :D

Blimy Hawk - that was a bloody good deal mate!
12% off the bike, plus discount on the luggage too - did you have a gun? :D

Seems like I should be looking for around 8 to 10% off the bike, and push for a bit of a deal on the luggage and accessories.

I've already had an offer of 6% from one localish dealer by just an email enquiry. I suspect that an in person visit with cheque book in hand should be enough to secure me the deal I want.

Still not as good as I was hoping for - I got 9% off my K1200S by negotiating, and that wasn't about to be replaced with a new model :(

Time will tell...

No gun, but I did have a mate (fellow UKGSer) who was buying one as well. NB I did part-ex a Gixxer1000 and got 500 - 750 less than I could have held out for private (possibly?). I think you should be aiming for 10% or push them for a pre-reg for even more discount. I can't see them discounting the 08 as Mr Jones will be first in the queue for that at full list :)

I ummed and aahed over new and then decided that as I'd heard someone say the engines aren't run in until about 15k miles I'd save myself about 3.5k and buy a two year old one with a years warranty. Fingers crossed it was the right move! ;)

Might have to change the thread title from "Buy or Wait?" to "Couldn't wait!" :D

Just bought one a few minutes ago - my local dealer who did all the ground work, and arranged the test ride, has just taken my order - as is only right :thumb2

They responded well to the other offers on the table, and put together a deal that I'm very happy with.

So big up to Bahnstormer in Alton - nice people who know how to look after their customers, as well as stick a competitive deal together :beerjug:

I've used their workshop services before, but this is the first time for buying a bike - I'd recommend them :thumb

so what was the deal then ?

come on - spill the beans :aidan

Brand new, unregistered bike, to exactly the spec I wanted.

£9510 list, £8500 - no messing, commit today, register before Xmas.

Plus they're doing a bit off the extras I want too.

All in all, good enough to make me buy.

Glad you got what you wanted. That sounds about right. Just had my 1st service at Williams Manchester today and they seem to have bought a job lot, pre-reg'd them and have them at between £1200 - £1300 off list. They had one like yours without chrome exhausts at £8399.

How does pre registering them change things..... surely they have paid the std price from BMW and therefore by pre registering them and dropping price they have lost margin?

Does BMW stop the from Discounting and therefore they have to pre register to make it look like second hand?????

Me no savvie

Stuart:confused:
