Currently on the hunt for a second hand 1200GS ___ budget of £6500.

I have read through many of the threads regarding reliability and 'model years'.

I am still left with two questions::

1.Should I go for extra's (panniers etc) or for the newest low mileage model i can find and upgrade later?? If so which year (im thinking 05/06)

Should I pay the extra few hundred to buy from a BMW used dealer and have the comfort of a warranty?? (I'm terribly worried about blowing my money and then having a major problem with no way to fix!!)

Some break down, some don't.

If you're worried about it then buy one with a warranty...

(I've had two 1200's and zero problems unlike my unreliable 1150 which once broke a speedo cable...)

i would say £6.5k will get you a fully loaded 06 model no problem.
i brought an 04 model with 55,000 miles as it was cheap had fsh and was well looked after mechanically. i would nt be bothered about a warranty but as above if it worries you that much then buy a dealer bike:comfort.
my theory is that you will pay £1000 more from a dealer so you need to have at least £1000 worth of repairs in the 12 months to make it worth buying. That is alot of damage plus warratys dont cover some stuff. i would buy the newest /best you can afford there will be bargins around in the next few weeks im sure:thumb good luck

Thanks for the advice guys.
(peepingtom) You make complete sense, think I'm going to head for the lowest mileage and newest model I can get for my money, although I may ease it down to 6k and save a little for insurance.

I'm getting very excited now!!! Hoping to have one ready and rolling ready for the spring........

Don't forget, you don't need to buy from a dealer to take out a warranty,
do a search on google for motorcycle warranties.

I picked up a 2004 1200 in March that still had the warranty running on it... Once the manufacturers warranty expires the owner can renew it on a yearly basis as long as the cover is continuous.... stop and you'll not get it back :thumb

Trouble is its £360 or there abouts a year.. plus the cost of the dealer stamp for the servicing.....

I'm now on another 1150 :augie

I didnt realise you can get warranty third party, thats interesting. I'll look into it online.

Thanks for the all the info guys really helped.

Have been looking into a GS for some time and a friend put me onto this site,
it really cuts out the dealer bullshit, so refreshing.

Look around non BMW dealers as well - I got my 05 from a Triumph dealer in 2008 for a lot less than the local BMW dealer was charging for the same model year. Only a 3 month warranty, but a big cash saving.

Gallanto,
Just did a quick check with www.WarrentyDirect.co.uk who cover a lot of bm's and i believe do a lot with the bmw owners club.
their cover was coming out at £233.91 a year for an 06 1200gs doing 10k a year.

Well thats got my head clear, thats what I'm going to do.

Thanks again + the quote (wrinkleyowlie) much appreciated.

Just need to find the bike now!! :type

Ditto transferable warranty....I bought a second hand 1150GSA 18 months old private sale in 2004 and certainly at that time I took the bike back to my local BMW dealers and had a new rear shock, swing arm and alternator done under the original manufactures warranty (all free gratis to me :D)... on top of that it was also an import albiet by an official UK dealer as they had run out of GSA at the time and had exhausted UK alocation. Happy days ... private sales do not exclude warranties all the time. BTW for my two penneth worth buy 1150 GSA SE or at least try one :thumb2

All good stuff about the warranty above.

Re. should you buy a bike loaded with extras - a tricky one. Personally I'd spend the money on the bike and pick up the extras on this site when they become available later on. There's always somebody trading and wanting to dump accessories.

Also don't get impressed by extras on a bike. By default they should have ABS and heated grips, if not you should be looking for a cheaper price. OEM luggage is the only extra worth paying for above list price.

Oh average mileage is 4k/yr, don't let a dealer tell you anything else, again a price reduction for any more. If you're in any doubt as to that fact, try trading one in with any more.

Good luck!!
