My 8 year old PC is begging to be replaced so I'm going to renew.

What's the best anti virus protection to go for?

I'm currently running with free AVG but now want the best available

Nod32 or Avir, both are free and excellent, if paying go the Kaspersky route :thumb
I dumped AVG after they integrated their antispyware software into it making it run slow

Get the Best ESET NOD32 Anti Virus :thumb2

Best? Dunno, they're all pretty much of a muchness nowadays.

Personally I go with either AVG or MS Security Essentials depending on if it's XP or Windows 7. Never had a problem with either and that includes identifying when the wife's work network computers get infected (as they do all too frequently)

I use avast on 3 machines - my lad's newish laptop, a 5 year old desktop and an 8 year old laptop. Works fine.
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download then here to register for the keycode http://www.avast.com/en-gb/registration-free-antivirus.php

If the product can keep a 19 year old lad's laptop free of viruses then it has to be good. The sick fucker will click on anything promising a flash of Britney's bits.

I can confirm is the way to go. Changed over to avast on advice of our IT chaps at work. Installed on a few desktops (mine and family) and a laptop and had no problems with viruses. Updates are easy and automatic. Just an anoying american voice telling you it did so.

:thumb for avast

I had been using ESET on my PC and picked up some Trojans, that it had missed

Judge (of this parish)................worked his magic and isolated them and cleared things up and I'm now using AVAST and it has been fine since

MY laptop has had AVAST on it since new in Aug 2009 and works a treat..............however just like your GS, it is serviced every month, by a man whose computer skills are akin to Steptoe's on bikes.................so you pay your money and take your choice

Anti virus

Been using Avast for several years now [ had it on 3 pc's , and 2 laptops ] - utterly reliable and if I can use it , anyone can .

Showed it to the I.T. guys at work , and they are using it for home pc's as well .

I am the UK Technical manager for an Anti-Virus company with many customers world wide, including competitors who use our engine and as a consequence I have tested many AV products over the last 10 years.

A reputable AV product is a good start when protecting your machine but not the final solution so it is worth taking a multi layered approach to Malware detection. Traditionally mixing AV engines on most systems was fraught with issues as anyone who has inadvertently installed a second AV product on a machine will know. Last year I was involved in the early testing of a new cloud based AV scanner called Immunet Protect.

http://www.immunet.com/

The product is free, very very good, cloud based with a high signature count and a quick engine and will run happily with the majority of other AV products. This means the average user can now run two scan engines with no performance degradation.

One final thing, I just tested the product, it is not our product and we are not connected to it in any way, it just works nicely :)

You might think I'm deluded on this but tests and reviews back up my words, Norton Internet Security 2010.

Forget the Symantec of old large footprints, resource intensive nastiness, they have learnt big time and developed something if I wanted a comprehensive solution and didn't mind paying for I'd have it.

But like Stolzy I have a far more effective solution of a fruity nature :thumb2

Windows firewall and AVG Free is fine for most applications.

Unless you really have something to hide.

So that's why my computer now runs like a pig even with a new hard disk!

I have seen this written and quoted many, many times ..... so can anyone give a laymen's explanation as to why Macs are not as virus friendly as Windows?

Why Macs etc

I have seen this written and quoted many, many times ..... so can anyone give a laymen's explanation as to why Macs are not as virus friendly as Windows?

Reasonably simple. Macs have a relatively small percentage of the market for PCs, and people who write viruses target the largest market.
The software on Macs is a little better written to prevent such attacks, but the principal reason is as described.
