Buying an Ex offroad schools Bmw f800gs,

Hi Greggers, what sort of bike was no-12,the broken bracket are Vines replacing it for you FOC,what even on a ex skills bike!!!,good customer service, they could have said sold as seen and told you to p*ss off,but good on them.

Are you a Vines employee?

Am I a Vines employee ..hahaha.. no...

A couple of issues came up during my subsequent conversation with the guys from Vines...

First and foremost please don't think I'm not happy - the bike's great and I think that Vines do the best they can with these bikes under the circumstances.

But - when I was talking with the Exec who eventually sold me the bike, I was told that the warranty would not cover any cosmetic damage. This I understood and accepted knowing the bikes' histories, and being honest these bikes aren't going to be pristine - are they? There was the balance of the manufacturer's warranty to cover any other failures. At no time was I told that they were sold 'As Seen', indeed, it was clearly stated to me that the bikes have to go through the workshop for a service and to check them over and make sure they're safe. The one I had my name against was late out of the workshop because it had a broken radiator bracket which had to be replaced... Vines replaced it prior to releasing the bike to me - all credit to them for that. Stuff like the headlamp mounting bracket and the busted indicator switch would be MOT failures so in my book ought to have an equal if not higher repair/replacement priority.

I'm in contact with the guys at Vines and hope to hear from them soon - I've proposed that I self-fit the components if they're willing to post them to me, so I'm saving them workshop time - hopefully that will be sweet enough for them..

Cheers

Greg

ps - #12 was the Magnesium Grey F800GS with ABS, Comp, Grips etc ..

Am I a Vines employee ..hahaha.. no...

..

I meant SA Boy

His posts seems to always add a bit of positive spin about Vines. It's a bit irrational :D

Also we had the lady from Cannon pretending to be a regular GSer and we also had the salesman from Park Lane doing the same ... so I don't think it would be improbable for a Vines person to do the same.

Very funny,no I have just bought a couple of bikes there and luckily had no problems

Am I getting the best deal?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum as I'm about to buy my first bike - which will hopefully be one of these ex Off Road Skills bikes from Vines.

I have a question for SA Boy & Greggers.
SA Boy we know the price, Greggers we know the spec...

The spec of the one I have a deposit on is the same as Greggers - Magnesium, Htd Grips, ABS, OBC, Centre Stand...... but the price is a few hundred quid more than SA Boy has paid....

SA Boy, does yours have the same spec?
Greggers, did you pay the same as SA Boy?
Feel free to PM me if you don't want to broadcast the details...

I just want to make sure I'm getting the best deal I can ;)

If I do close the deal, and the bike is ready in time, I'm looking forward to joining my first UKGSers ride out on New Years Day...

Thanks for your help and replies guys,
Publudio.

I guess it's no secret as all you'd have to do is ask the guys at Vines.. £5425 for mine, but I think all the extras on a list bike would come to over a grand - I've just tried to find current BMW prices but they've disappeared...

It makes me feel a lot better to check Bike Trader and find something like this and know that for the sake of a few scrapes and scratches I've saved myself the best part of two grand!

I have a plan for the cosmetics which will come into play next year, but the reality is that having a bike 'pre-worn' like this takes away all the preciousness about it and lets you use it how it should be used without worrying about an odd scrape or two ...

I was at Ripley this year (on my liddle 400 KTM) and camped next to a really nice bloke on a newish 1200 .... after several cups of tea it started to get a bit dark and as quick as a flash he whipped out a cover for the bike ... my first thought was hmmm - this one's not going to see much piste... is it?

I've got to say, one thing that makes me chuckle a little bit is the sight of an immaculately turned out and clean 1200 that's been Zega'd and TT'd to the hilt, ridden by some old geezer in a pristine rallye suit... never gets further than Waitrose or the golf club...

I ride mine dirty and proud...

Greg

Thanks Greg.

My thoughts too. I spent a long time (far too long in my wife's opinion) looking for the right model bike for my first bike.
I want an all rounder as I find out what type of riding I'm realistically going to be doing.

The F800GS seemed to be very good at almost everything - certainly more bike than I am a biker - if you see what I mean.

Buying one that's 'pre-worn' as you say means that if I have a spill or two then I'm not going to be frantic about scratching the plastic etc.

The balance of Mfr's warranty and the pre-sale service from Vines, together with their assurance that all mechanicals will be fixed prior to delivery means that I should be getting a very good bike with great residuals.

Glad to have found such an informative, friendly and welcoming group too....

Thanks,

Just a quick update on the bits for my bike...

Received an email from Vines this morning saying the parts (headlamp bracket and LH switchgear) were ready and waiting for purchase approval from Duncan prior to being shipped to me ...

I can only say .."TOP BLOKES!" :clap

Greg (not a Vines employee!) :jibber

How has the bike been performing for you Greggers?
Have you had a chance to put many miles on it yet?
Any issues at all?

Hi Pub ..

The bike is 100% ...
I'm on my 2nd tankful now, so probably 300 miles or so,
Yeah - I know, but for the first week I owned it I couldn't even walk let alone get on the bleedin' bike!

I'm going to deal with the cosmetic issues in the next couple of weeks - watch this space!

Greg

If you want a purely off road bike, I would advise going for something lighter and definately non abs -than a f800gs...

A lot cheaper and significantly more capable... espec for sandy piste in Morroco...

Oh I don't know... I found it a scream in the Moroccan Sand :clap

If I look a little wooden its cos I had never ridden in sand before that day:augie

Just interesting to resurrect this one.

Mine's done 20k now, with nothing more than minor niggles.

I've replaced:

2 sets of tyres (still got some half worn TLC80s)
Wheel bearings front and rear
Steering head bearings were replaced by CWs at the first service
service and recall items - fuel level sender and breather valve, front spindle
two sets of brake pads
two chains and one set of sprockets
Fixed the leak from the cam cover

That's it.

Other than fkucing around with accessories the bike has performed faultlessly and uses no oil unless I rag the absolute shite out of it on the motorway (example: the weekend I did 1900km in 28 hours ...). It doesn't rattle or rumble and sounds as sweet as it did on the first day I owned it.

Overall - well pleased!

Oh - and I could still now sell it and probably not lose any money...
