Buying Discs

Need to buy some blank cd discs, to put all the morocco pictures on to send out to people.

And in my , they had CD-R and CD+R , they were the same price. wassa difference ? -

Some Cd writers use CDR+ and some use CDR- and some use both. Usually says on the front of the drive my DVD R/RW can use both.

Steptoe, Its just the format of the disc. As said some drives use + and some use -

Your PC is probably new I am guessing and it should not really make a difference, Go back 5 years or so and it might of. Anyway only really matters more with DVD R's

I thought only DVD discs rather than CD's were distinguished by -R or +R options For storing photos I would have thought ordinary decent quality data CD's would not only be adequate, but ensure the widest possible compatibility when distributed to lots of people all with different vintages of PC's; not all of which would be able to read DVD as opposed to CD stored data. Great pictures by the way...

Nope. CDs, DVDs and most media types suffer from the problem of multiple formats because the industry can't work together over common standards. See high definition DVD and Blu-Ray for the latest example of this tosh. When will they realise consumers hate format wars... The solution, although often the more expensive one, is to get multiformat CD/DVD/HD DVD readers/writers, then it doesn't matter who wins. For CDs there's CD+R and CD-R; for DVDs there's DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RAM. This isn't new; VHS/Betamax is the earliest example I remember, and I wouldn't be surprised if other kinds of tape had the same problems.

Decent LG (or any mfg for that matter) drives that can read/write pretty much every format under the sun are mega cheap these days, around £23 when I last bought one.

The whole standards issue has always been a pain.

In my experience with various PC media over the years I have found that '-R' tends to be the more widely used and accepted. For example, my Playstation 2 will not read DVD+R but it will read DVD-R no problems
