looking at buying a rukka armas suit from biker land.de, very good price which is even cheaper if you can supply a valid uk vat number. i can supply the vat number through the company i am a director of, no problem at all. now i pressume if you supply them with a uk vat number it stops you paying the german vat which i think is 19%, but will i get hit for the uk vat when the suit is delivered in this country ??? this would add nearly £200 to the suit and it then becomes a little less attractive !!! has anyone any experience of buying from biker land with a uk vat number ???

You won't get hit with UK Vat and the goods will be supplied to the company not you net of its German equivalent. In theory the transaction could be picked up by HM Revenue and customs but its unlikely.

What's the difference between not paying the German VAT and buying it in the UK and claiming back the VAT? HMRC wouldn't make the distinction.

If the company is a motorcycle courier service then you'll be OK, but if the jacket is not for business purposes then you'll likely be in the poo.

What if you ride to work and business meetings, does it become a business expense then? I'm asking because I work both as a contractor, but also have a separate small business my partner and I have started which is vat registered. As I use a bike as my primary transport (girlfriend owns a car, I don't) I wondered if a new suit would count as a business expense.

Yes, I plan to ask the accountant but just wondered if someone on here has already looked into this.

Cheers,

I put a new suit through the books, we then had a VAT inspection and they found the receipt for the suit, they wouldn't let me claim, even though I said (and do) only wear a suit for work and never at home! Barstuards!!

I don't know, but I very much doubt it - IIRC you'd have to be able to demonstrate that it was required for your work and that you only used it for work.

Otherwise everyone would be claiming for suits to go to work in (no you can't)

Before you buy the "Cheaper" Suit

Before you buy from Germany you should bear this in mind.

My Rukka Armax suit faded after 18 months it was returned to the retailer and replaced in a matter of days without question or query.

The replacement has (after 18 months) done the same, there was a problem with the material on some Armax suits, again and without any issues the suit has been replaced (I am collecting it tomorrow).

The suit is being replaced with a new Armas suit, this is excellent service and worthy of consideration before you buy from overseas.

The retailer is Hideout Leather www.hideout-leather.co.uk who I cannot recommend highly enough.

the reason for buying from germany is the suit is not quite half price, it 55% of the cost of buying in the uk. Talk anbout RIP OFF Britain!!!! you still get 5 year warranty, i suppose it will just be a little more difficult should i have to claim.

Rossi, the Armax jacket is 949 euro from biker land, if you wangled out of the 19% german vat that would be about £686 but delivery would be dearer than uk source. Infinity have the armax jacket at a special of £719 (vat paid). Not much in it and no hasle from the MAN? Infinity jacket and trousers reduced by 23%, not a bad deal since I looked at these in the winter:blast
Good post this as I'm keen on getting Rukka kit :thumb2

but then when you telephone biker land you can get the armas jacket & trouers for £980 including delivery, makes infinity's special deal look expensive doesn't it. the armax has been replaced by the armas and therefore is now an old model, that is why infinity are discounting them. there is no difference between buying in the uk or germany, you still get the 5 year warranty, the only difference is the price, can't imagine a uk dealer offering 45% discount !!!

jazbee, if you are interested in buying rukka gear i will keep you informed on how my transaction goes. i have bought armadillo jacket & trousers for £715 including delivery (uk vat number supplied). the uk price for these is £1330 which after haggling i could get 5% discount making it £1260, a £545 saving is worth it IMHO

Cool....let me know how you get on? I've got a VAT registered company

i ordered the suit last wednesday and paid via paypal (at no extra charge), suit arrived yesterday (monday). once i placed the order i was emailed with a dhl tracking number so i could keep an eye on where it was upto. excellent service, can't fault them whatsoever !!! one thing to note, when i tried to negociate with a uk shop he tried to put me off "importing" one and told me that the german model did not come with a back protector, well i can assure you it does, it is exactlly the same in every way as the uk one i tried on. "rip off britain" strikes again !!!

Good to know, I may well be buying an Armas suit from them very shortly.
