I'm fed up with the silly BWM lead plug coming out of the silly BWM socket on my BWM heated vest.....it just pushes in and it's not tight enough to stay in, particularly when I'm faffing around taking the lead out through the aerostich pockets etc.

There obviously has to be a point in the lead that is designed to pull apart so when I get off the bike and walk away forgetting to unplug meself, I won't pull the fekke rover or rip out the socket from the beak, but I'm going to rewire the plug.

My plan is to glue and rubber sleeve seal the plug into the jacket, then cut it about 6" along and put in a plug and socket.

I'm thinking of something like a stereo lead (which will give me 3 connections) or an autocom type plug.

Does anyone
a) Know how many wires there actually are in there
b) Know how much current I'll need to allow for and
c) Have any suggestions for good plug/sockets that would suit??

I've run a separate lead from the fuse box, which has an on/off switch, with a socket at the end, not a BMW power socket ( when the jacket isn't plugged in, i switch it off). It comes out by the front of the seat on the left side.

I've put a socket on the lead of my heated jacket ( a chilli with a thermostat), which i plug in when needed.

When not needed for the jacket, i can use the socket to power anything else .
 
Sorry, Steptoe.......but I believe you've missed the bleedin' obvious........

Bill's on about the poxy little three-pin socket/plug at the JACKET end of proceedings.........

......as a recent acquiree of said BMW waistcoat, I wholeheartedly concur......the connection is a bag-o-shyte........(CoolCarbon taught me to speak like that......)

Anyway......I'd be interested in a decent solution......

[ Sorry, Steptoe.......but I believe you've missed the bleedin' obvious........ ]

I was just passing a comment on Bills other part of the plan -

i haven't got a BMW jacket, so haven't mentioned re-wiring the actual jacket it's self, or the type of socket to use.

Indeedy, that's what I'm on about..I have two power points i could use but it is the pplug at the jacket end that's giving me grief....it's nothing to do with taking power from the bike, but everything to do with attaching the lead to the jacket.

Just spoke to Ming on the phone and he pointed out that I can't use a stereo type plug/socket 'cos it'll short out if I disconnect without turning the juice off first, so that's out.

I reckon it's got to be the type of connectors Autocoms have.

I feel a trip to Maplins coming on ;)

.......but what you didn't factor in was the fact that I've been inhaling Guinness since I stopped polishing the bike.........

I reckon this is the sort of thing I need.....there are at least 4 wires in there, so a 5 pin DIN plug/socket will do connection wise......

It depends on the current really........will a DIN plug/socket handle about 10 amps???

(justa guess.....the jacket probably piulls 7-8 amps)
 
DIN are fine........

I changed the plugs on my Mrs's heated socks to DIN....works a treat....;)

Bill, you're a wimp, ADV riders don't wear heated jackets, it's only us 1150 wimps that need cosseting :D

Just a bit of info:

There are four wires going from the controller to the heated vest. I think two are to supply the heating elements and the other two may be some sort of sensor connections, as they are much thinner.

No way will the heated vest draw 10 amps. That'd be 120 watts, you'd cook yourself :D Also remember that the aux circuit on the bike is only rated at 5 amps max. I reckon about 2 amps per jacket.

I think the 5 way DIN plug/socket that Fanum posed a pic of would suffice - they should take 2 amps without a problem. They probably aren't the most waterproof or robust connector - but they are cheap and easily replaceable.

i've been trying out my bmw heated vest.

i hate the way the vest attaches to the bike leaving a coil dangling.

i hate even more the way one has to un-zip to reattach to the power supply. and the 4 pin plug is so fiddly.

did you solve it fanum?

stephenenglish's solution looks the ticket to avoid having to unzip to get reconnected.

but how do you stop the dangle?
 
Oooops....nope, I never got round to it......

There was a cold snap the other week....I wanted a quick blast out but couldn't be arsed to get fully changed so i stuck my bwm vest under my 'stich....soon as i plugged it in though, it blew fuse 5.

Tried another fuse, blew it.......

fekk.

I either need to replace the vest or rip it apart to investigate.......and now it's warm :rolleyes:

The principle's sound though........
 
Here are the RS part numbers that you need:-

464-404 Series 719 4P socket @ £3.14 ea

115-2398 Series 719 4P plug @ £3.07 ea

The latter item is c/w a cable strain support, but you cannot buy the 4P socket with it?

Therefore, buy 464-410 5P socket and swop the ends over on the the 4P one.
If you want to save money buy the 464-381 5P plug and only wire four pins up.

These are the same Binder type connectors that BMW utilize on the jacket, but they "snap" together much better for some unknown reason??

XLR plugs are really good quality plugs and will take high current

I did look at those to be honest but dismissed them due to the overall length when the two halves are connected together.

The other ones are only about 45mm in total when connected together.
