Rewiring heated grips?

I've got the OEM heated grips on my 2008... like the fuel strips, it's another item i've given up replacing as they seem to fail so often - but unlike the fuel strip I actually value having them there in the colder (ie. all 12) months in the UK :)

Has anyone got a guide to rewiring them? I mean the heating element wire, not the harness wiring as that works fine.

I'm sure I remember stripping an old failed one down to discover it's just unshielded wire wrapped round the plastic grip underneath the rubber outer on one that I had. Although I think I recall one having a more contemporary-looking embedded ribbon element, also...

Is it doable - even as a bodge? I've currently got a warm right hand and a cold left hand!

Cheers

And I'm sure someone will say I'd be better off with heated gloves. Agreed - but are there any that can be modified to connect to the the existing left and right BMW grip plugs so I could control them using the existing two-position switch?

On the motor guzzy v85 the standard switch and wiring are there for you to buy the heated grips. You can also wire up Oxford grips which will work. I haven’t done it myself but there’s plenty of how tos on line. Don’t know if they will work on BMWs but might be worth looking at. They are said to be better than original. JJH

I had the throttle grip fail. Replaced it and noticed how thin the rubber had worn. Fitted grip puppies and no more dramas.

Throttle side on mine has failed twice. First time, replaced with a new part.

Last time, I took the assembly apart and could see where the wire had broken, on the moving part of the twistgrip. The wire was far too fine to join, and didn't seem long enough to reconnect anyway. So I got a short length (about an inch) of copper wire, the thick single strand stuff for wiring heavy-duty appliances, and hammered it flat. I got the grip wires into position, laid this bit of copper wire on top and bound it tightly with electrical tape to hold it all in position.

Bodge job? Most definitely! Still working 3 years later? Yes.

never looked - I expect its real, not the first version of this repair I've watched - they only need them to die - how they deliberately designed them to do it doesn't really matter
