Byways on OS Explorer Map 144 - Basingstoke, Alton & Whitchurch

If I click on the picture it says that the page cannot be found...
How can I get the waypoints?
I host the photos on Zoomr - they have moved to a new "version" several weeks ago and have hit various problems. The Photos still appear in the posts on this thread but everything else (i.e. the clicking, upload, editing of them etc) is a bit fecked at present :D

The Waypoints are available as a Mapsource file on this post

If you don't have Mapsource then just look at the title of the Photo on a post which I have labelled as the OS Grid Reference.

Clive it looks like you put a lot of effort into that...I hope people appreciate the time it took
Yes, it does take a surprising amount of time to study the OS maps, find the lanes, ride and photo/document them etc but it gets me out in the open air from time to time, so I enjoy it :)

Hopefully others find the info useful and it may encourage a few others to get their GS out in the dirty bits :D

I'm planning a "Waypoint Treasure Hunt" based around the lanes on OS Explorer 144 map in the not too distant future :thumb

Thanks to you Clive, I've been inspired & bought the 144 map.
I don't have GPS or any of that gubbins, so I'm going to have to try and work out all the routes you've done and plot them on the map with the help of my daughters coulouring pencils.

Sounds like a great idea:thumb2

Well, the textual versions of the latest waypoint file are...

I'm going to show myself up here, big time:o

The only way I know how to use any map is to use the numbers down each side of the map. I find number 71 along the bottom & follow it up until it reaches the side number 40 & then I know I'm in Alton.

Shall I get my dunce hat on now:nenau

So how do I use these figures with just the map?

Sorry to be so dense.

(I can hear the rest of the forum laughing & taking the piss as they read this):blast

Take a look at this which will guide you to this PDF file which will hopefully explain it.

Unless you have a very small ruler only the first 3 numbers of each set of 5 numbers of the waypoints above are useful on a paper map

e.g.
SU 41071 59243 => SU 410 592

SU 41071

The SU bit gets you to an area 100km by 100km

The 41 bit gets you to an area 1km by 1km

The 071 bit gets you to an area 1metre by 1 metre i.e. 71 metres to the right of where easting grid box 41 starts IYSWIM

Mapsource works down to this level of accuracy but the GPS isn't accurate to that level anyway :)

Cool!
So I was on the case in the first place but didn't realise that some of the numbers help divide the initial squares for greater accuracy.
Now I also understand the significance of 'SU'

Many thanks for clearing the waters:thumb2

What I use is a Post-it note sized square of paper marked (by using the grid 10ths lines along the bottom and sides of the map) with (what becomes) 0,0 in the top right hand corner of the paper square and labelled left to right with 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and bottom to top with 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 - then use the 0,0 corner to point at a place on the map - it is then easy to read off the "10th" i.e. the 3rd digit of each group of 3 digits.

Nice tip.
I can see an evening of spreading the map over the dining room table and working my way though your list.

If it wasn't for your time and effort, I would't have known about all these lanes that are, as near as damn it, in my back garden.

:beerjug:

Clive

You are rightly getting a lot of thanks and support for the work you've done. I've found lanes that I must have ridden past 100 times without realising they were byways - a whole new world is opening up.

We won't mention the puddle I dropped it in near five lanes end, and the fact that the wife had to hose me down afterward though OK? And no,no pictures available of my hosing the wife down....

Thanks again. I definitely owe you a pint.

SU673593 to SU665592

A short UCR, slightly overgrown but fairly easy.

SU673593
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433931/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433931_20c13413b5_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU673593" /></a>

SU608559 to SU609554

A fairly short byway leading to another byway.
Very overgrown and narrow in places.
Probably not for the novice and very difficult for a 4x4

SU608559
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433933/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433933_c077ab55ad_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU608559" /></a>

SU607554 to SU615550

First few hundred yards are ok, then becomes rutted and soft going.
OS map shows it as Byway from SU607554 for about 1/2 its length then becoming a RUPP.
Byway signs present from SU607554 end but no obvious "Restricted Byway" signs seen - at the other end is a wooden "Right of Way" signpost, so exact legal status unknown :nenau

SU607554
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433935/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433935_a3ec87a495_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU607554" /></a>

Becomes fairly deeply rutted on both sides with a slippy (after recent rain) middle section  around SU614550
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433938/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433938_2c92984305_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU614550" /></a>

SU615550 - shown as "Right of Way" this end but might actually be a Restricted Byway :nenau
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433972/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433972_e799a29846_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU615550" /></a>

SU588541 to SU588548

Fairly easy going - part way along becomes concrete with grassy middle strip.

SU588541
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433977/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433977_b20c7ba0a9_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU588541" /></a>

SU588548
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433979/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433979_51473c633f_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU588548" /></a>

SU588550 to SU590561

Start off as a wide ruts dirt track

SU588550
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2433982/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2433982_6f6f56f7ee_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU588550" /></a>

which becomes more rutted and slippy when wet, watch out for large brambles catching on and twisting the handlebars
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2434029/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2434029_2af07171bf_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU588552" /></a>

leads to a tricky (when wet) downhill section through the trees, some flint, stones, tree roots and some sections of slight washout.
One of my favourite places for a break.
<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/2434031/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/2434031_14d2edcc3b_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU589554" /></a>

Out of the woods, both sides of the track are firm, but overgrown at this time of year - the grassy middle section is flat(ish) but slippy in places.
