Caen to Limoges

OK, here’s a suggestion for you. It will take the sting out of planning.

Go to the viaMichelin website http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/

• Enter Caen as your departure point

• Enter Limoges as your arrival point

• Drop down a bit

• Click on ‘Options’

• Click on the motorcycle icon

• Select ‘Discovery’ from the drop down routing options list

• Select miles

The route it offers up is 275 miles of which 77 is on motorways. That’s about 1/3 or viewed another way, you have 200 miles on non-motorway N and D roads. As a bonus the route is not too bad either. Now, here comes the fun bit….

Look at the map the website offers up, with the magenta route displayed on it.

Zoom it in and out a bit. Notice anything? No…. OK, here’s what you should see:

(1) Very often the non-motorway roads run exactly parallel to the motorway. That’s why they (probably) built the (dull) motorway, to speed up traffic flow on a (possibly) dull main road. You might be better off just taking the motorway, after all it’s just tracking the same route.

(2) Don’t want to? OK. Zoom in a bit more. You can now see the yellow D roads filling in the gaps. Do any of these look as if they might suit you and your overall 300 miles in a day plan? Yes? Great, we are now cooking on gas.

(3) Compare the routes with the Michelin 726 map you’ll by now have ordered… say yes. Do you get a feel for what the overall route entails? Yes? Wahoooo… we are on a real roll!

(4) Now comes the tricky bit….. You will not have your computer with you as you hoon your awesome steed towards your mother-in-law…. Panic not!

(5) Load your final route into your GPS, if you have one. Job done.

(6) Don’t have one? OK, take up a pencil and paper and write the route down, along with the road numbers and towns you’ll pass through. You will not remember it all otherwise. Job done, two!!

(7) Want to have a fun final check? Look at the same route in Google maps and go into streetview. You’ll be able to see exactly what each road looks like and even the road signs.

Enjoy your holiday.

No thread on French trips is complete without a mention of the Millau bridge and at least two for Oradour sur Glane. :D

Like many well intentioned suggestions on things to see and do, this one falls foul of the acid test of time over distance. The fellow has 300 miles to do, preferably on non-motorway roads down France, a country it seems he is not entirely familiar with. He’s already detouring away to look at the Channel coast; now he’s meant to be walking around a destroyed French village. Oradour won’t vanish in our lifetimes, save it for a rainy day.

No doubt they're mentioned 'cos they're so impressive.

Bazman, I recommend Oradour sur G. as a day-trip from your destination - not as a stop-off on a 300 mile day, obviously.
I should have mentioned: Visit the museum too. The aftermath, trial and politics is very revealing.
The D-Day beaches\tours will around for years too. I suspect you'll think about leaving these for another trip. There's an enormous WW2 museum in Caen too -well on the ring-road actually. (I'm mentioning it, not recommending it. Just in case that fouls any litmus test)

As I've mentioned I have already visited it and agree with your observations :D
As for the D Day beaches , a very quick shifty I think at maybe Omaha then brekfast and hit the road.
If i've any time , i plan to do Millau when I'm at Limoges , but that's a 400 odd mile round trip lol so what chance have I

Great. You'll have it all plotted out by teatime.... Ask D Hendy for his route, he's created it already.

You know you better than we do.

Only problem is my route is from St Malo! But he is welcome to it just send me a PM.

Two and a half weeks until we head down there, half a day at Oradour then off to look for the Grand Design house to the SE of Limoges that the older couple restored to become a B&B after it was burnt down by the SS as it was used by the resistance. Then back up to Brittany for four nights before heading up to the tunnel.

Let's hope we all get better weather!

enjoy and let us know how you get on :thumby:

Hi guys , just home , had a cracking time . Got thoroughly soaked on way down , which was a shame and had to jump on motorways to get there.
On way home took the motorways up to Normandy in good time to check out Arromanches, juno etc then back to the ferry .
Have a few photos , but if time i'll do a write up in good time. GS 1150 performed faultlessley and didn't even need an oil top up in 1500miles riding .
Cheers Baz :beerjug:
