In the past I have always booked both ferry tickets in advance. This trip I have booked an outward ticket but no return intending to buy one in Calais when I get back. Is this a wise decision or is it significantly more expensive just to turn up at the port and buy a ticket?

I don't know ...

... but you're about to find out

I'd suggest just getting some internet access and booking on your way back. I've done that a few times, just a day or so away, and lets face it, it isn't going to be any more expensive doing it that way..

I usually don't book for the return and just turn up - TBH I really can't remember what the difference is but it's not significant enough to register on my radar; maybe an extra £20ish for bike and 2 peeps :nenau

IME it's double money using the tunnel and just turning up.

yesterday, all the train crossings were booked, the P+O ticket was £78 for one way flexi ticket (about £20 cheaper than the standard one)

A McDonalds is always a good place to stop on the way back, they have free wifi and so just click online and order a crossing at a proper rate
