Penny to a pound says that Neil has no idea what he spent the £50 he 'saved' on... just as, as he always quite rightly points out, he has no idea what people who save 30p on fuel spend that on
Being a natural philanthropist i redistribute my unearned new found wealth to the poor, as all should.
Simply done, as i passed through villages i called out to street urchins and the destitute as they stood forlorn in the gutter " i say, you there, have some money, long live the queen toodle pip" while thrusting coins in their grubby outstretched hands.

Here is an idea of a more direct route and brings you right past our door

Ferry Portsmouth to Le Havre. Do an overnight crossing, get some kip and maybe a beer bonding on the ferry LD-Lines are doing some good deals at the moment... Works from Calais too but add an hour or so.
Take the A131 - A13 out of Le Havre towards Rouen then nip down the N154 (Bikes free over the bridge, couple of euros more toll to the N154) through Evreux, Dreux, Chartres, Orleans avoiding Paris where you pick up the N20 to Vierson, from here head for Issodun, and La Chatre where you pick up the D940 which will take you nicely down to Treignac via Gueret, Borganeuf, Peyrat le Chateau, Eymoutiers - Overnight at Ridersrest (we'll be ready with a cold one), takes between 6 and 8 hours at a cruiser pace approx 380 miles. Also you will be close to the A roads if you find you need to get a move on.
Then the 2nd day take the scenic route to the Cantal Volcano Park over Puy Mary and down into Aurillac through the Lot Valley to the Millau then down to Perpignan jobs a good un

If you and your pal fancy pampering yourself at a typical french chateau I can recommend this place. Stayed there last year and its just 5 mins off the main auto route. Suggest dont tell the girls tho

My parents have a house in Ceret (not far from Perpignan) and they usually drive down in 2 days. I've done it in one go and it wasn't much fun. Including calais to Surrey it was something like 17 hours in the car.
Funnily enough I was chatting about bikes with our neighbour down there and he said I could just get the bike on a train all the way down to Perpignan. Is that too pricey? I can't say I've investigated it yet.

That'll get you to Narbonne although it seems you travel separately from the car (no mention of bikes but I'd imagine if they do cars they should do bikes).
