Hope someone has an idea.......

whilst copying a cd (not on the fly), pc rebooted itself, I finished the copy on the fly. I now have the following problems:

1. cannot load any software via the cd-rom drive, it freezes at approx 12% to 48% installation, but I can install ok through the cd-rw drive. have replaced the cd-rom drive, no difference.

2. am now getting regular crashes, either freezing or blue screen of death with 'a fatal exception error has occurred....etc'. have replaced ram with kingston, and tried to track down error codes on M'soft knowledge base unsuccessfully so far. crashes have all been when using internet explorer, all requiring restart.

I'm running 98SE

Hope someone out there wants my babies!!!!

Me ? - I'd get a copy of XP and load it on over the top.

if you can't do that - then at least reload Win98 over the top or as a repair.

if you can't do that - move your data somewhere safe and reformat your hard drice - then reload the OS.

if you can't do that, B&Q sell satisfyingly large ball-pein hammers............

You Windows installation is farked.

Easiest thing in my opinion is to purchase or steal another hard drive. [from about fifty quid or less Ebuyer
or Dabs

Read the destructions and make the new Hard drive the primary and your old one secondary. Install a new copy of Windoze onto the new Hard drive. Then you will be able to grab your data off the old one. Then use it as a backup or a frisby your choice :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks Chaps,

however I forgot to mention that this had all taken place on a brand new hard drive after a failed attempt to upgrade to windows 2K (because of hardware conflicts) knacked my old drive.

So I started with a clean install of 98 on a new drive, thanks anyway

a new install of 98 in 2005?

ugh!

bung XP on as motomartin says, only do a clean install.

how did installing W2K knacker your hard drive?

you have done a virus scan/spyware check have you not?

what is the cd copying software?

cookie- I know, I know, but until now its been good for me, I can't put xp on, probably cos of the same reason as 2k won't work. I did borrow a drive with xp on, but it just would not boot up.

hard drive knackered thus: half way through the (2k) install it decided I had a hardware fault and system halted. I tried to put 98 back on, but that wouldn't recognise NTFS. I had foolishly committed to NTFS because it had worked on my old steam powered pc no problem! I have used onetrack to get most of the data off the old hard drive, so I'll do a low level format to recover it.

shugie, the only anti virus I run is AVG and adaware, both clean, and 'anti-ping' on my wireless router. using nero, but all the snags are there with nero removed.

I have a sneaky feeling that it could be mobo snags, I may go mad and by a new pc with xp.

Thanks again for your help.
