My G650XC (7,000 Miles on the clocks) has started what sounds like a cam chain slap/ticking when starting from cold, valves were checked 1000 miles ago and l have just changed the oil plus added a scheffelmier metal oil cooler I guessing this is to do with the cam chain tensioner operating off the engine oil pressure. Has any one else had this issue? Should l be worried?

Do you have to add extra oil to compensate for the extra oil in the cooler?

If it is cam chain slap or dodgy tensioner I would certainly investigate it further.

Have a look at your cam chain tensioner it make be sticking.
I had same problem on a 650 rallye bike, there was no spring fitted so just relying on oil pressure, I found a suitable spring which worked perfect until fitting a complete new tensioner which came with a spring.

You could try just polishing the piston.

I added a extra 200cc of oil to allow for the oil cooler when i fitted it. Though the only other issue was that the bike was sitting for almost a month with no oil in the engine before l was able to fit it due to waiting for new clutch cover/parts.

I had a look at the cam shafts/auto decomp and valve clearances last night and all are within spec, with no damage on the cam shafts/journals (was a worry as l had to replace them last year due to damage), while l was doing this l could push the tensioner in and it springed back out so it does not appear to be sticking. Due to the bike sitting for so long with no oil could this cause the oil to bleed out of the tensioner? as from what l've found so far online it appears that the tensioner need to be pumped with oil?

Will try and get the tensioner out tonight, I have a spare used one somewhere from a Xcountry so could swap it and see if that makes a difference.

I've removed the cam chain tensioner but it seems fine the same as the spare Xcountry one I have, Pumped full of oil and no wear on the piston.

One thing is different though, the Xcountry tensioner bolt is slighty longer than the one l removed from my Xchallenge.

A update encase anyone else has this issue in the future. I fitted the xcountry tensioner which has now stopped the noise so the other tensioner was faulty. Hopefully I wont have this issue again.

A too tight chain wont rattle so do be sure that longer bolt is the correct one.

I had a look though the BMW part finches and appears that the longer bolt is the correct one and is also used on the later 05-07 F650's too.

Is there an easy way to take the bolt out? It seems to be behind the oil tank and frame and so not easy to get at.

I have the cam cover off at the moment and can see the tensioner but can't push it back in easily unless there is a trick for that as well!

Hi Viv,
the oil tank can be left piped up you just need to undo two M6 bolts and you can pull it to one side whilst you pull the tensioner out.

It's a piece of pish and should take no longer than 4 minutes. :thumb2
