I've had several Guzzi's with 36mm carbs but they have all had the plastic top 'mod' to lighten the throttle response.

My current LM is the same. I have to say it has the heaviest throttle of any Guzzi I've owned and despite new Venhil cables and playiong with routing (please note Cookie ;)) I have yet to get something I'm happy with (more investigation required) which has got me thinking.........

Do the plastic tops really make much difference? I much prefer the look of the cam operated tops and if I'm gonna have a heavy throttle anyway what the heck, I may as well source some of these and be done with it :nenau

I have yet to look for any but are they reasonably easy to get hold of, anybody got a pair they want shot of?

Any thoughts?

Andres

PS Oh, and I did once shorten the carbs internal springs - don't think I'll try that one again

i've tried plastic tops that feel lighter than mine, but the standard crank(?) tops i have fitted seem ok too.
the trouble with the plastic tops is getting a really good cable route to them. ideally, they would seem best with the cables outside the tank, which looks daft.
otherwise, i've seen some with steel 90° guides on top of the carbs. that might help?

have you tried lubing the cables? i know you're not supposed to, but i really can't see why not. i often do, with good results.

Ha, I know what you mean about the routing looking like it should go outside the tank and I have oiled the cables (like you, I usually do).

Now you come to mention it, I've had those 90' bends on a previous bike and removed them which, IIRC, actualy helped a bit. The LM has them so maybe I'll try removing them and see..........mind you, I guess that'll mean new cables

I think I'll also try and see if I can find some reasonably priced 'crank' tops and see if there really is much differnce - they defo look so much better :)

they do look the biz, and that's what counts :D

off topic: i guess you're taking your le mans to sids for the airhead w/e?

Are you taking yours?

I've not riden mine since getting my new hip.................but prior to the op it was excrutiating to ride for more than 30 miles or so (from my doubled up metal leg as well as my hip). New tyres being picked up today (BT45s) and MOT a week Saturday so after that will have a 'proper' ride and see how it pans out.

I'd love to go on the LM but if it looks like too much grief then I'll be on the T3 Outfit, so, one way or another I'll be on a Guzzi :)

good question.

i hadn't planned on even putting it on the road this year, just don't feel the urge, but it might be nice to take it to sid's if the sun's shining.

actually the only bike that will definitely be on the road is my 1200 :o

i say definitely, but it is a 1200.....:D

I fitted the lightest weight throttle springs to my Cali', (36mm carbs) made a big difference, much lighter throttle. They do return the throttle from wide open to shut as well, I was warned that they might not.

I also changed the grips, sounds daft but the ones on the bike when I got it, seemed almost like hard plastic. I didn't realize until after I changed them, that they were slippery, so I had to hold the throttle that much tighter, which seemed like it was a heavy throttle.

Ta Elliminator - I know what you mean about the grips and agree, I have the original hexagonal section ones but I'm loath to replace them; I may have to though.......

the le mans, II, III and possibly later originally have "waffle" pattern grips.

sorry, no pics on google, but i find them comfortable and a decent diameter for winching up the throttle slides :)

i know it's only a pair of hand grips, but i like that pic :)

They look even better on the bike :)

Just fitted them and I have a useable throttle again. The main prob was the inside edge of the old grip rubbing the cable housing. It was only a leetle bit and impossible to see until cutting them off.

It's now as smooth as a smooth thing and no heavier than my T3 - oh, and defo more comfy to hold.

Now then, who's got some proper crank carb tops they want shot of?

Andres

i think there should be a plastic washer between the throttle grip and the body to minimise friction.
i've made them out of old oil cans before now :)
