Camber Sands 3,4 jan 2004

I had this crazy idea I'd buy an ordnance survey map and go get some soft-sand practice this week-end.

Anyone fancy meeting up down there for some tow-rope and shovel action?

Failling that, I'd be curious to hear from any one who knows the area - is this a very stupid idea? Will I get arrested? Will my GS be swallowed by quicksand, or will it be a blast?

IMHO, yes.

It might have been a good idea, except:

• the ambient temp is likely to be somewhere between 3°C and -3°C
• it's hard enough keeping the effects of salt off the bike without riding through sea-sand
• What the hell do you want to practice for - the next time you go to Camber Sands or are you going to enter the next PD?

Sorry mate - it just seems a daft idea to me.

Re temp:
I was hoping the winter temperature would keep sunbathers and volleyball players off the sand, leaving fisherman the only likely targets.

Re salt:
True. I'm planning an extended session with a water-hose afterwards. Though I was hoping to find tracks that were more inland / dune than beach / surf.

Re PD:
I've wanted to enter ever since I was a little kid growing up in France. I plan to take the TSE Dakar course in Tunisia next year and enter the D the following year.

But mainly, I need the exercise and besides, practise is fun

I think you'll find the dunes at Camber sands are protected and I for one would be bloody annoyed if people started riding their bikes over them. It does nothing for our cause.

Hope you can find somewhere legal and less destructive!
