Cambrian Rally - regulations available

I'll be there

I'm booked in on my little CRM250. Too scared of scratching my 1200!

Hope to meet some of you there.

Dave

Cambrian v Yorkshire Enduro

I'm afraid we took a decision to abandon the Yorkshire Enduro to the rest of the committee - I couldn't miss the opportunity of a 400 mile return drive to spend time in your company in Cornwall......(same drunks - different town!)
P.S. We will be bringing flyers for the Forest, Moor & Coast Yorkshire Rally of Discovery in "Heartbeat" country for Mayday weekend 2007 (blatant advert!).
See you and the others in Falmouth...

Entry sent

Just mailed my entry for the Cambrian, the Airhead team with Dennis and his mate !!
Does anyone have any tyre recommendation for this event. Has to be a full road legal E marked tyre, and you cannot use Michelin AC10 or road legal motocross tyre??
Cheers

Suitability for a novice...

Would I be completely insane to attempt this event with little off-road experience? I ride a 650 Dakar. After some great fun off-roading this weekend, I'm going to be putting TKC's on it... and I would only attempt it if I could find someone to ride with.

But I only have one day green laning and one day of motocross and 3/4000 miles on the road since early July... when I passed my test! Just how insane am I?

Jase, come along, you're bound to find some like minded people to ride with. TKCs are fine for this sort of event if you are not trying to be particularly competitive. See you there!

Jese 1st cambrian

come along , there is always a few you have never done the event before
and everyone will give you a hand in your preperations
one thing that might make the event easier is to buy a front sprocket with one tooth less ( if it is a 16 buy a 15) and put that one for the event , it will make the bike easy to use and take the pressure off the clutch
you should get a sprocket for about 10/15 quid

Hi Mouse and Phil - thanks for the encouragement and suggestions! :thumb

I'll fill in the regristration form tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting you guys there!

Jase

Jase - I have a small front sprocket for a 650 (14 tooth, standard is 16). I bought it to fit to Clare's 650 when I was using that off road but never got round to it, so it's surplus to requirements. If you want it I'll bring it along to the rally, plus a suitable tool to fit it :)

That's great - I'll need all the help I can get! :thumb

Let me know if you would like payment in beers, money or both :beerjug:

Im entered on the wee bike...... did consider taking the Africa Twin but decided on the 450 Katie Emm..... I can pick it up more often!
This will be my 4th Cambrian....if anyone hasnt done it then I suggest you have a crack.....but be warned .... its addictive....

Airhead Tyres for the Cambrian
As far as tyres go for riding an Airhead in the Cambrian Rally – back in the 90’s we were limited to Dual Sport tyres for the trail bike classes. I used Pirelli MT 21 tyres on the G/S. Front 90/90x21 and rear 120/80x18

Since around 2001 WTRA introduced the use of FIM tyres for the big twins and as a result I started using Michelins (t 66s I think). Front 90/90x18 and rear 140/80x18

I normally run with one security bolt on the front wheel and two security bolts on the back wheel, and have my tyre pressures at 19 front and 18 rear. I keep these tyre pressures for the sighting lap and then make a judgement as to whether to drop them lower after I have seen the terrain

I know that many people run a lot lower pressures than that, but I am always wary of compression punctures and dings on the wheel. It is easier to loft your front wheel with the smaller machines if you are heading for a rock step. The G/S tends to hit it and then bounce up/over it.

As far as competition use goes – for a pair of new tyres - I get 2 days use from the back and four days use for the front and then I bin them.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Sounds like a toss up for me for TKC's, MT21 or Heidenaus.....lets see how wet it gets before the event.
As for tyre pressures, i'll run normal, usually works ok
Thanks :thumb

Accommodation...

Hi

What does every one do in terms of accommodation for this event? Are there suitable b&b's or does everyone camp?

Still trying to work out if I get there the night before or not...

Thanks

Jase

Never done The Cambrian before although I have done PJM, Hafren etc. on my Beta pogo stick. A couple of weeks ago I ragged my F650GS around Scotland (1250 miles) for 4 days on road and have now decided to use it for The Cambrian aswell to see how good an alrounder it really is. And just for good measure I'm going to ride it from Leicester, do the Rally and hopefully ride it home again. Mind you I don't think I'll be troubling Mssrs Gunn and Keenan :bow more like providing traction when they lap me ;) . I'll just be glad and amazed to finish.

Forgot to ask?
Any advice on crash protection for the poor old girl ie. bubble wrap and gaffer tape. Anybody who's seen me ride knows that 'not falling off' is not a realistic option.

Cambrian on a F650gs Dakar ?

maybe put on hand protectors that will protect the Bars and levers , and from memory you should change the front sprocket to one a Tooth less on the front ( you could change it when you get there )
and enjoy

I'll be camping at the Llandovery Rugby Club, assuming that's available, I am pretty sure it is.

Most people B+B though I think.
