Hi chaps, have you seen the gaggle of 5 overhead cameras on the A20 in each direction at crittals corner area, near sidcup.
I wondered what they are for?
A while ago, "AGO" woofed the speed camera there, and that has now been removed and these overhead jobbies have appeared.
"AGO" has been put on several speed cameras in the area in spray paint, and then they are ceremonialy torched.
Bit dumb really, because the council will just get fecked off replacing them, and then we will have mobile cameras instead.:blast
at least with the static ones you know where they are...
regards Paul

They ar wirelless speed camera and they ar linkt to a compiuter in Munbay India:eek:50mph :D

probably

cameras for the new emission zone

I've seen them and treat them as 50mph speed cameras, based on the fact that the previous ones have now been removed. I've had a good look on t'internet and can find no information on them.

I remember looking in the statistics that justified the location of those cameras. It was actually quite a safe bit of road with no fatalities and v.low accident rate. I think they were put their for 'special reasons'. Never quite seen the point of those cameras, as you're busy trying to filter on/off the road (if you're off to Chislehurst / Sidcup) and match 50mph.

I think they are monitoring traffic flow.

.. but don't blame me if you get caught speeding !!!

Out on the bike today, I've just noticed that they've started installing some of the Low Emission Zone infrastructure round and about. Looking at the map it would appear that the A20/Crittals Corner would be an entry point to the zone, which could account for the new cameras. Just a thought......

They have the same ones on the A2 too......strange that they seem to be by the original cameras though...
Anyway.....there are 2 new digital cameras on the Eltham Hill too.
Those are definately needed there....loads a kids and schools about and they do cane it up there.:rob

Camera on the A20

As I understand, the camera`s are the ones which measure your average speed over a set distance and there will be more of them.

The road junction is a very dangerous one - I used to go to school at Kemnal Manor - and only last November there were two fatalities on the London bound side, unfortunatly both bikers hit by cars in two seperate incidents.

They look totally different to the average speed camera's and there's no "Average Speed Camera" signs.

As for the danger - its made more dangerous by people trying to merge between lanes whilst looking at their speedo, fekkin crazy:eek

I understand that these are part of a new network of cameras that will be integrated to follow us everywhere. Its part of a National programme to monitor every journey and store every sighting of a vehicle in a database. These are specific cameras for the job but they will be integrated with existing traffic cameras (blue and yellow) and cameras in petrol stations.
These are replacing the Gatso's all over the place and are installed high up to avoid vandalism. I have seen two or three sets go up on my journey from Maidstone to Canary wharf. I think eventually they will monitor us for speed between points and will replace Gatso's generally.
They are forward facing and so presumably cannot lock on to bikes. I've being going through Crittals Corner ones in excess of 50 for the last few months and nothing has happened yet. With the reduced number of Gatso's and these things apparantly not "seeing" us, certainly at the moment, I'm making hay!!

I commute through here and I have to disagree. There was a period when the old Gatso was removed before the replacement digital job (and these 'overhead' ones) came into existence. Some of the traffic coming down the A20 was really shifting, and then trying to exit whilst merging traffic was coming out (across the same lanes at half the speed (ie 50ish) and it was terrifying. At least with the camera there everyone hit their brakes, got down to 50, and then set about merging/entering/exiting etc.

Problem with the new cameras is no one seems sure what they are for, which mean most hit the brakes, but some are still flying through.

These cameras have also sprung up on other main roads heading into London over the last 6 months or so, so my money would be on them having something to do with The Low Emmision Zone

Agreed. They are going up all over London and the suburbs. They seem to be numberplate recognition cameras (one for each lane), similar to the congestion charge ones, and are probably to do with the low emmissions zone - and are bound to be used for quietly keeping an eye on us all etc etc - irrespective of any statements to the contrary, what government/agencies could resist the temptation of using all this technology to 'combat serious organised crime' or 'terrorism' ?? :augie.

If they are for charging/checking entry into the Low Emission Zone then why are they installed in BOTH directions - in and out of London ?

I bet they will serve multiple purposes - speeding and traffic monitoring.

It would be nice to know for sure though as I have to go past the ones on the A2 and A20 almost daily.

I guess that they face bothways to see when you come in and leave so if you happen to be in town overnight the money grabbing bastard called Ken Livingstone can charge you for two days in the LEZ:blast
