left the tank at home safe and sound as eddie didn't need it
anywho eddie has just sent me a pic of the headlight unit so far. recon this will look bob on when its done. Mind you for the price i bloody hope so

To Bristol today to have some glass finer bits made. Hired a big box trailer so she'd be safe and f**k me if she didn't go and fall overeven though I strapped her down with six tie downs. So now I've got to get the crash bars and rear subframe re powder coated

Whatever you do don't use those cheap ratchet straps available from every where. They are not well enough made for securing bikes -I came close to trashing a pristine Ducati Darmah when one broke 
Proper bike tie downs are not that expensive when compared to the potential damage caused by your bike falling over.
Proff is right about the carabiners -added security.
Sorry to jump in with a mini rant but I have seen many bikes scarred from being poorly secured and it is easily avoidable.
Not having a go at you Syco -sh*t happens but we can all learn from it.

We have a box trailer and came close to serious damage to the bikes the first time we used it.
The reason is simple. Box trailers have flat floors. Even if the bike is tied down securly when you set off, the bike will move around on the flat floor as the trailer bounces along behind. Tie down straps become loose and the bike falls over
Easy to solve. Bike in gear (to help prevent it moving forward). Four pieces of 50mm batton per wheel (front, back and sides) screwed to the floor to prevent the tyres from moving. Tie the bike down as normal making sure the suspension is at least half way compressed.
(Like you never knew that 
). Don't forget to check the bikes every hour ish, just to make sure.Our trailer now has propper wheel clamps and wooden blocks to prevent the second wheel moving sideways. Four tie downs 'one in each corner' per bike. Three thousand miles around Europe in the trailer with no problems, or even carabiners.

The trailer was behind our camper. We've done Europe three times now, twice on the bikes with a tent. We saved over £600 by taking the camper, hotels cost a bl**dy fortune

I've found a small photo of the BMW Dakar bike, riden by Auriol, during the '84 Dakar, it's almost identical to yours except the tank has different paintwork.
What year are you modelling yours on?

How's the paint different? They used two tanks during the rally, one smaller one larger with the only difference being the direction of the motorsport stripes. As my tanks the smaller type the stripes run back to front. It's never going to be exactly the same as it was originally due to the lack of photos of the original bikes and the fact most pics are taken at funny angles which throws it out of proportion but if you feel I've missed something please feel free to tell me.

This photo is of the large tank and the stripes run from above the carburettor diagonally forwards, until they reach the word 'Penthouse'.
The bike in my photo also has the number 100 so it must be the same as the other photo in this thread, the caption states that the photo was taken 'au cours du Dakar 1984'.

The larger tank had the stripes starting under the penthouse decal then sloping back and down with the stripes sitting in the knee cut out. The smaller tank they slope forwards from the penthouse logo. I'm guessing this was so they could tell the difference when in the heat of the moment putting the wrong tank on could spell the end of the race or even death if you ran out of fuel in the middle of nowhere.

So there was no possibility of putting the wrong tank on backwards?
now thats more like it
after loads of phone calls and studying of what pics we've got this is as close a match to the original nose fairing as i think we'll get. anyway abit of trimming and some deft use of filler and i recon this will look spot on. problems seems to have been cos all the pics show it in brite white it doesn't show the lines as theres very few shadows. luckly we found a pic of shleck on his bike which has the same fairing and the pic shows the shadows so we could work out where the lines go all i can say is good work eddie

Found out today my shocks are stuck in customs in coventry and now I've just got to wait for them to get off their arses. Oh and I got the throttle I've been looking for today just got to find a 16mm brembo like the sort off a guzzi t3.
