Campsite Base in the French Alps

I'm going to the French Alps in the 1st week of September, with a plan to camp somewhere central like Barcelonnette i.e. Stick the tent up and leave it there, having days out on the Col du Bonette, the Verdon Canyon etc.

Does anyone know of a good campsite they can recommend? I'd prefer quieter to louder although after a bottle of vino-de-falling-down I probably wouldn't care less.

Any views/tips would be greatly appreciated

Castellane is surrounded by campsites some walking distance from the town, which has a good choice of restaurants and lots of great rides, even col. de bonnete is easily do-able, enjoy
