I'll be going away in April with the family and would like to take my young lads pit bike with us. He has only just had it so just a bit of easy ground for some experience would be good.

We usually go to Porthmadog but I'm not sure if there is anywhere around there that would be legal.

There's a place called Tom's farm where you used to be able to ride try a search for that.:thumb

Thats a shame! never been there but sounds like it could have been run properly and kept open?

So, any other suggestions? he only needs a bit of space to get used to riding on.

It would have been handy to be able to follow him around on my bike but not essential - I could use a MTB

I have seen kids go on the beach in the evening but I'm sure that won't be legal.

I don't want to rain on your parade. But I used to work with Police and Local Authorities, regarding illegal riding on a national basis. I know the police can seize the bike if it is being ridden in a public area. They may say the bike needs insurance, tax and the rider to hold a driving licence too.

If you can find somewhere that caters for off road riding, like Tommys farm that is the ideal place for him to go to and you can supervise him safely.

All the best

It's going to have to be a trials park or motox practice track.....
What I would do is sell that stupid little pit bike, and buy a proper trials iron, and get the lad doing some proper events.
He learns excellent bike control skills, how to compete and be competitive, and meets loads of decent like minded folk, some of which will have private access agreements with land owners.......
If he finds trials ain't it, then he can move to motox or even xc (hare and hounds), there are events catering for young people now.

Have a search for Cardiff MX track, there is a council run place off Rover way down the docks. Pay as you ride and it also has a bmx/ mtb track too. Also there is a farmer up in the Risca area that lets you ride his track for £15 a day IIRC. It may be worth searching for VDSR as they are a club who may know a bit more :thumb2

I thought Cardiff MX had shut down...I helped construct that site with the Council and the last I heard it had been closed by the Council.

How old is your lad....if he is 9 or over has he thought about motocross. I am secretary of a motocross club in Birmingham, PM me if you want to come and meet the gang and see if its something he would like to get into.

Thanks for all the replies.

When I say its a pitbike, I mean a PY80 copy. It is as new and cost very little indeed from another kind chap on here.

It was that or a playstation for Christmas and hes been asking me for 3 years how old he has to be to ride a bike:D

My lad is nearly 7. Its just a taster for him, if he likes it then he can decide which way to go but I do agree trials riding makes a lot of sense.

I knew when I bought it that finding places to ride would be a pain but just now a field with permission will do until he gets the basics.

Would be nice for him to do while on holiday and we have plenty of time thats all.

Yes, I know its not a CRF but the sticker kit was cheap and his fav colours so I cut it down to fit. All dressed up and nowhere to go:comfort

I've got to get him used to holding the bike first. I'll be having him walk around the bike balancing it etc. Once he has the hang of that then I'll move on to the riding. It creeps along smoothly at very low speeds so I'm sure it will get him started off OK. Its no louder than a petrol lawn mower.

Ferret, I didn't know of this place, I'll give them a call. Could be ideal for a local place to practice if they have some flat areas to start with. Much appreciated.

Not a pit bike!

Squid, that bike is eligible for competion now.
They use them in small youth meetings, both race and trials.
You need to find a local club that caters for the younger rider.

Squid, That bike looks wicked, has your son stopped smiling yet:):)...

If your thinking of trials why not take him up to Bracken Rocks which is near to Matlock, I know they have trials training days up there....I can get you a contact phone number of the chap who is in charge if you wish...

Try asking Fforest Fields camp site near Builth Wells. Been there a few times and I'm sure I saw a young lad on a pit bike last year. Really nice people and loads of space for folk to do their own thing. :thumb2

Thanks timpo, the wife rang the place from the link above but the old dear who answered seemed unsure over the bike.

Any ideas what it would be classed for? She said they only allow trials bikes. If I advised her it was a trials bike we should be OK do you think then?

I think a few clubs may operate from there so that will be the next place to ask.

Morticia, that would be most kind of you. Matlock is further but in case the other place doesn't work out.
