I am currenlty riding a f650GS 07 model,it has the standard ABS,heated grips etc,i have fitted spots and use the external socket for a warm jacket.

The problem been is my battery keeps dying,as in i have on my third new battery,i have had fuses blown, been to BM for a diagnostic to find nothing wrong,i was stranded the other day as it would not start or even jump,Bm have now told me that the bike does not make enough power to run everything!

The battery one went before the spots and jacket were included and was in the middle of summer, does anyone have any idea what could be causing it,the dealer is pushing for a different bike.but hell i like this one and want to stay with it,is there anything i can do.

Thanks i advance

Sounds like you need to get busy with a ammeter / voltmeter. And checking for damaged insulation.

Sounds like it could be a short if you're having fuses blow, and lack of battery capacity. But diagnosing this sort of defect on a keyboard isn't going to be easy, if at all possible.

For instance, we have no idea if all you do is 5 mile commutes with heated clothing and all the lights on, if you use a charger at nights etc etc .....

if fuses are blowing, the fault may not show up , as it may be intermittant, at least you should have an idea which circuit it is

Thanks for your replies,i work away so my bike is left on trickle charge for two months, then the rides i do on the bm are generaly an hour plus or until the fuel stop,i use it mostly for traveling.I have another bike for playing.

I have only used the heated clothing once and that was on a 220 mile no stop route, once i tried starting again that when the batt died,is it possible for the Little BM not store/make enought power to run everything?

is it not a 400 watt alternator it has

what items do you have switched on when in use?

the wattage of the spots
and the wattage of the vest

The 2000-05 will be fitted with the 400W alternator as should the 06/07 bikes.

It is however worth checking 'or having checked' the actual Wattage of the later/final F650gs's, because the 'X' series bikes are fitted with a 280W alternator (which probably explains the extra 3 BHP) I think too 'but not certain' that the re-introduced to the US market F650gs is also fitted with the 280 alternator.

There is also the theory of the Optimate type trickle chargers actually shortening the life of batteries too.

Val and everyone who replied, thank you for your input, the problem been was me,i wired up a set of adventure spots of my old bike,it could not cope with the extra amp needed.
Also i was running extra warm kit of it as i was using it to go to Norway next week.
Moved onto a 800gs,said goodbye to the little 650 today, thanks again
