Everywhere I dont really want to be...
Hi Y'all,

Im still looking for the "one"..if you know what I mean.

Something more "enduro" than a GSA, different, something for a bit of a strip down & spannering..something classy, and most of all cheap...

Ive come across this :

http://suchen.mobile.de/motorrad-inserat/bmw-gs-1000-friedrichshafen/164701964.html?lang=en&pageNumber=1&__lp=4&scopeId=MB&sortOption.sortBy=specifics.mileage&makeModelVariant1.makeId=3500&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=gs&makeModelVariant1.searchInFreetext=false&makeModelVariant2.searchInFreetext=false&makeModelVariant3.searchInFreetext=false&vehicleCategory=Motorbike&segment=Motorbike&minFirstRegistrationDate=1980-01-01&maxFirstRegistrationDate=2000-12-31&maxPrice=3001&negativeFeatures=EXPORT

Its near to me. Ok, so its not an original PD...and maybe difficult to get it registered here in Swiss-land...

..The engine ( domed heads & seemingly lowish Kms) does it for me, the PD tank - in yellow...different..high fenders...cheap...Its starting to tick all the boxes..IYKWIM...

...Looks like a bit of rust here and there, new bolts and maybe a wheel rebuild, new tyres, and probably a gearbox / FD /forks strip down etc...

...At second glance...possibly too much for me to take on..but Im up for a challenge...:nenau

Any respected opinions out there ????

I'd snap his hand off. Buy it and just ride it. Touch the frame up with smoothrite and it'll be fine just as it is.

All you need to do is bounce on the shock to make sure it's fine and then take it for a spin to see if there are any bad vibes. If there isn't then buy it or haggle on the price.

Youd get half the asking price for the frame and tank alone.

buy it now.
it has great parts on it.then you can do a build up.
i will buy the tank off you.:)
as you says its not an original pd,
are you after a paralever paris dakar then or a mono g/s pd then?

I've been looking to scatch the buying itch for a while now. Been looking at all sorts. Mostly non BMW coz every one's got one here. Internet is great but seen loads that look good on the PC but are right sheds when you get there. A special mention must go to the VFR 750 that looked really interesting for a project but was trully shagged on inspection. Luckily it was just up the road so I wasn't homicidal afterwards. Would have been different had I schlepped half way across sausage land to see it. But if it's not to far and/or you have a van or trailer, it looks an interesting machine. You can bet your nelly though, if it was better than it looks in the web, it would be up for a lot more. I notice it looks like it has the alloy airbox so the motor is not the one it was born with. I bought a Triumph Sprint 955i in the end!!!!

I'd snap his hand off too.

Not because I know anything about airheads, but because Rob says so :thumb2

(It does look nice, in a 'proper' sort of way though, IYKWIM)

What have you got to lose?
A quick tarting up and you'll sell it on for more if you don't like it, and if you do like it, you got yourself a bargain :D

I didn't get chance to go and have a look on Saturday...But regarding the alloy air box...How can you tell ?

The normal type of airbox on a paralever is made of black plastic. The one in the picture looks as if its alloy. There are far more expert people on this website that wil be able to shed light on it. Given the tank and the look it may be worth a punt. Air heads still fetch strong money in Germany, so go and have a look if its not to far.

According to the blurb and the date of registration suggests it was originally a 1988 R80GS Paralever (as I believe the 100 didn't come on to the market till 91?) This might have something to do with the airbox being the older alluminium type. Though it could simply have been substituted for the original plastic one (it's quite an easy swap) in an attempt to solve a flat spot problem produced by the non standard exhaust. (This is something Rob tried a couple of years ago iirc).

If the air box is original to the engine (and this would clear up the 100 engine in an 80) then it is likely to be an older early eighties /7 replacement for the original. Hence the bigger cc.

The Tank 'you probably already know' is from a mid eighties PD Mono (and worth a few quid) These are a direct fit onto the Para frame. The seat looks very much like the Mono seat. However it also looks like it has been adapted to the para rear subframe (which in turn might have also been modified), rather than the bike having been fitted with the Monos subframe. Rear mudguard is also not standard to either bike. At the front, the forks are oe Mazzochi for the para and the front fender looks very much like the oe para hi fender. The stone guard has probably been added for asthetics and would look better if it had the correct bash plate fitted with it.

When you get to look at it. Stick your head underneath and have a look at the sump. If it has a sloping front. It will be the older non gs engine. If it has a vertical front edge and a small bash plate, then at least you know it has the sump off the gs motor. This won't however confirm that it is a gs engine. Just that the sump has been swapped, which would also suggest that the oe engine expiered and was changed, rather than simply swapping it out for a 100 engine. Especially as it is far easier to fit the bigger barrels and heads than to swap the motor.

As these guys have already said. Don't sit on your ass thinking about it. Go buy it now!

If nothing else, it's a great starting point.

Yep!

it's a simple bolt on. You replace the starter cover and airbox with ones from a pre 81 bike. It does reduce the torque at lower RPM but puts it a little higher making for a nice linear progression. The problem I had was that the bike ran lean at the top end and there's no jets available from Bing small enough to give the correct sizing (bing jump from 150 to 160 on the larger sizes).

To be honest it probably isn't for the faint hearted. If your not used to spannering on airheads it's probably a little daunting for you.
