I'm on a trip at the end of this month to Switzerland - 29th to be precise with a bunch of GSers off this site.

Having only bought an 800 GS last summer it wasn't really kitted out for a long trip so over the past 3 months I've been buying bits in readiness - 140 quid for the holiday - best part of 1500 quid for the bike bits - cheap holiday!

I've bought panniers, hand guards, crash bars, tank bag, touratech bits to stop things wobbling, higher touring screen etc.

All completed last month and then out for a ride on May 1st to make sure it all felt ok and found myself on my arse on a roundabout in Dudley having been knocked off by a range rover who didn't spot me coming off the island.

So.

The question is - am I going to get to Switzerland at the end of the month??

Looks like the bike has

Wrecked left side pannier and pannier frame
Bent crash bar
Broken mirror
Broken indicator
Damaged screen
Cracked fairing
Broken Nav system
and more worryingly doesn't quite go in a straight line

The bike was collected only yesterday by Clarks in Rednal and hasn't been assessed as yet. Got a visit from the insurers tomorrow to talk about uninsured loss - helmet, jacket and other bits and pieces that disappeared in the accident such as 42 inch plasma, bose sound system:augie

Think I might need a softer saddle as well!

What are the chances of getting to Switzerland on the 29th?

How long have you been an MP? :augie

Given that you only have 3 weeks, I don't think the insurance claim will be settled by then. The other insurance company might be persuaded to make an interim payment, particularly if not doing so will mean you claiming for a holiday you can't take. Having said that, if you're fully comp then everything can be sorted on your policy and then claimed against the other party. Question is whether your bike is going to need a new frame or be written off. If it's a write off then that will mean you looking for a replacement and kitting it out in the time you have - I guess you can simply move most of the kit over from your crashed bike. If they decide to repair your bike with a new frame then it depends if they can supply one and then rebuild your bike in time. If it looks as if it's not going to happen, speak to your solicitor or insurance company about the possibility of hiring a bike and claiming against the other party - it all depends on how strong a case you've got against the other party and whether they'll wear it.

My only advice is to keep on at them and keep things moving. Keep a diary of all calls, time and date they're made and what was discussed and keep track of all out of pocket expenses. And don't accept any first offer - it will always be pitched low.

Best of luck.

Can Clarks fix it???

Reckon Clarks would have their work cut out sortin your arse in time

Good luck :thumb2

How do you come off with the panniers and accesories etc claim wise? Did you inform the insurance company? Will they be covered? Its just I'm thinking of getting some panniers and so on and wondered if Ins co. need informing? :nenau

My insurance is with BMW/Devitt/NIG. The general view from all seems to be if its bolted to the bike then its insured. Clarks say they will replace like for like once the assessor has done his stuff. Company called Toad rang me on tuesday and told me I would get a replacement nav system next week.

The policy has 500 for personal stuff which won't cover the helmet and jacket and a 250 excess.

The other party admitted liability to me and the police who arrived and also have a witness who left his name and address with me. Insurance view is that thats ok as long as his insurance company also admit liability otherwise it could be long drawn out.

can they fix it,

Hey fella

I hope you get it sorted out soon with your insurance.
And you don't miss out on a great trip.

My only advice will be with an arse like that is an air hawk :augie

I lot will depend upon the speed at which Clarks move at. Have you asked them to source all the bits required with ETA's ready to jump on the job soon as the green light is given?

At least if you know a list of parts, the delivery times and the hour to fit the time frame will be known.

Factoring in a trial run to check all is well.

Another thought.

Advise the insurance companies now of the expected claim costs.

1. Contact BMW and advise the trip is to go ahead and seek a cost to hire the same bike inc time to fit and then remove your required equipment. Won't be cheap but everything can be sorted for a price.

2. point out the holiday costs. One, there will be no group discount on accomodation if you have to go alone later in the summer. Also the holiday costs rise fast after May. That will be another £1000 on the claim at least.

3. The cost of your time. As cover has been arranged at work for your break you cannot cancel your leave. You will then have to take additional days to complete the trip later. Factor in your daily rate for taking an extra week off work.

The Ins company will see that sorting the bike quickly will be their cheaper option:augie

Sorry to hear your news, hope the insurance and Clark's get things sorted for you to go on holiday.
