I like the Puig windscreen an Givi hand guard inserts.
Improved rider/weather protection. :clap

But,I'm not too crazy about this "extra loud" exhaust note found on these later models.:(
My 'ol 2007 model was nice an quiet!

How do find the the Puig screen? I am thinking of fitting one to my GS, do you still look over it or through it? how tall are you?

Ha...ear plugs...that magical "cure all"....!

With only 100 miles of experience with this new wind screen,so far so good. I likes!
I'm roughly 6' tall and when seated on the bike,I can/do look over the screen adjusted to the "Lo position". The air flow goes over my head/helmet vs: the stock wind screen which allowed the air to hit me directly in my face/ eye area. Which results in a quieter ride. But now the exhaust note is much more pronounced...
At 85 mph and above, some turbulence is felt. This I believe is caused from the air rising up from under the front area behind the wind screen/fairing,which is under the handle bar triple tree area, directly in front of the fuel tank. This "dirty air" causes a turbulence in the riders seated area.
Hopefully when I do mount my TT tank bag, this turbulence will subside or disappear.

I would never ride without earplugs, even though the damage has already been done.

For years I rode without them before I knew any better. I now have tinnitus in both ears and loss of the upper noise range also in both ears. I struggle with conversation, watch tv with subtitles and no longer go to gigs. I wear hearing aids in both ears and they help, but don't undo the damage.

Fortunately, my wife is a latecomer to riding (pillion only, her choice) and has worn earplugs from day 1.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!!

erm...the noise would be my guess :blast

Noise indeed !

Im an Ex Infantryman. Exposed to lots of "Noise". From Mortars to small arms and IED's.

Ill ask again, and spell it out.
Where would you say, in your own words, The noise that has damaged your hearing come from?
EG. Mortars, Bombs, Music or Motorcycles ?
Hope that helps :blast

Haha,

I have the Puig screen with Cymark brackets and they make it solid as a rock and helps with windyness, as an ex infantryman I too have tinittus from that darned charlie G.......

Wind roar is the most common source of hearing damage amongst motorcyclists... Do a search. I'd rather go without glove than earplugs.

I hated the 84, And thought we were much better off with the disposable 94, But they wouldn't let us fire them, so haul them we did !
My ears suffered from continuous 7.62 Sustained Fire.
Darn.

This was why I was asking.
If Im being honest, I've only been using ear defenders the last few years. Never bothered for the bulk of 30 years. Im surprised that not wearing ear protection can result in such severe consequences unless there is an underlying issue ?

The cause of the damage was agreed by my audiologist. The damage was done by years of riding without earplugs. It's the constant 100+ decibels for hours at a time that did it. 70s and 80s helmets weren't designed to reduce wind noise. No fairings to direct the wind past the helmet.
I have no doubt that years of rock gigs didn't help, but a gig lasts a couple of hours every month or two, whereas riding daily, with regular 3 hour + rides was where the real damage was done.
I am sitting here having been woken at 4 am by the tinnitus. It's not much fun. Earplugs every ride. Cheap foam ones work well and if you lose one, so what.

Bristolsaint,
I've tinnitus, .........many years of working on aeroplanes...... , and have just started having acupuncture for it. After 3 sessions, it's reduced a bit, not gone, but not so noticeable.
Maybe worth a try?

Agreed . I have had tinnitus in both ears for a year or so from 40 years riding without plugs .Annoying as I should know better , and there's nothing you can do about it .Plugs in now:thumby:

Thats a good shout. I bought a little pillow speaker to drown out the 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee' noise when i try and go to sleep in the dead quiet.

Sorry - my first response to your question was facetious....and apparently not funny.

Good friend of mine is a sound director. He use to work in the music industry and music theatre but tends to do more corporate and video/TV stuff now.

He has told me there is evidence to suggest just a small number of exposures to sounds above 100db for even a short time can have a permanent effect on hearing. Tends to be high register sounds that go first and as it's normally gradual people don't even realise the damage they are doing.

As his ears/his hearing are his livelihood (his words) he is incredibly careful. He wears ears plugs to do DIY!! Anyway he has a price of software on his laptop that is a kind of hearing test. He scores in 90's. I scored in the low 80's (almost always wear plugs) which puts me above average apparently. A mutual friend who is a biker (doesn't wear plugs) and works in a noisy environment and has done for 20+ years scores 50 something and he thought his hearing was spot on.
