Hi All,

I was wondering how I go about viewing the ukgser website (or any other website) on my PDA (Garmin iQue3600) whilst I’m travelling. Assuming I can get access to a desktop PC (internet cafes etc) can I just connect the PDA to the PC and download the website to the PDA via USB? What sort of memory space would I need on the PDA?

I don’t really want to connect to the net via PDA and mobile phone etc. Would rather download then surf at a later date.

I’ve downloaded avantgo but that’s as far as I have got! Now what?

Thanks
Garry

I've browsed the site with Opera and a p900. Best to turn off image loading as gprs is expensive. It sort of works, but it's slow.

Catching up on a days postings no-chance.

You'd need the admins to set up a daily digest like a mailing list, but I doubt the bb with images would fit that model very well.

I browse this and several other forums using a bluetooth connection to my GPRS mobile phone. Its pretty easy to set up and your phone supplier should have the details. Having said that I am not sure what the coverage would be when travelling outside the UK

Thanks for the replies,

We will be travelling all over Europe and Middle East etc so wont be able to afford the mobile charges hence downloading from internet cafes being the only option.

IanF, The PDA has a 1gig memory card so what about “Saving As html” each page that I want onto look at, onto the PDA. Would I then be able to use Avantgo to view the pages?

I know all thissounds like a bit of a performance but I'd rather sit in the tent at night and catch up with the news etc than sit in some sweatbox internet cafe all afternoon.

i have avantgo on my pda, but unless this site becomes a avantgo channel, it's not possible at the moment to download the site to the pda. avantgo would also need to be installed on the pc in the internet cafe for you to update your pda.

hope this is some help :)

It's not really a website, but an application spilling out threads as you look at them.

Trouble is the whole site is in php and it's probably really big in practice, so even if you tried to save it for offline browsing it'd be:

a) more than 1gb.
b) take ages to transfer.

IE used to let you try and save an entire site as a property of a bookmark object. Firefox doesn't bother as far as I can tell. How it would fare with a bulletin board is iffy (i'll try later).

You'd be better off trying to look at it sparingly in a mobile browser. As pointed out above avantgo was a sort of proxy for websites that gathered summaries and partial pages, not a browser.

GPRS charges are high, my orange one is £5 for 3mb/mo. and in my experience international roaming gprs is not a standard.

3mb could be used up easily on a single Mike0 diary page for example, great stuff, but not worth a fiver on a palmtop screen.

Summary... you need to buy some books.... or a weeny laptop and post your trip to us, but forget doing too much reading of the site.

...tried it in i.e. - probably not going to work very well.

it might also impact everyone else so i wouldn't recommend it.
