Can I have 2 "Map Families" on the same CF card?

I have a StreetPilot 2610 with European City Navigator V7 loaded. I now also have Garmin compatible maps of Poland (GPMapa4) installed on my computer, and can alternate between them in Mapsource using the drop down box.

I have managed to download the Polish maps to the card, but of course this then erases the CN maps. :( Does this mean that I will have to carry 2 cards (1 with City Navigator maps, and 1 with the GPMapa4 maps) or is there any way I can load both "map families" onto the same card? :nenau

I think so. Think so because on my Nav 2 I can select which maps I want to see eg, City Nav, speed camera overlay.

Need to be loaded in one go though!

Taff, am going to Poland in Sep, where did you get the downlaods for Poland?

I bought them from a Polish company called Excel - details were found on the Garmin site or from HERE

They are advertised as "Garmin compatible" maps and have worked well so far - in fact almost identical to City Navigator. The only exceptions I have found is that for some reason car parks aren't shown, the graphics aren't as advanced (but certainly good enough) and it shows Polish "Radar" sites - which I assume are speed cameras. They weren't cheap 850 Zlotys from memory, but I intend visiting several cities in a comparatively short time and know how getting lost in an unfamiliar city can ruin a perfectly good holiday. :thumb I'll contact the company again, to see if its possible to sell on the maps, but I assume you can't, although apparently I am allowed to install them on another unit.

I think you've cracked it Mr Armstrong. :bow Just downloaded 2 small maps from each family and both now show as separate "Map Families" on the same CF card.

No problem.

First (in MapSource) select a set of maps from one family, then select a set of maps from the other family, then upload to the GPS map memory. Both (or more) sets will be uploaded.

In the GPS you can go to "set up map" and select which maps you want to use.

HMR is correct. There is really no limit to the number of different cartography products you can load onto one CF card (or Garmin data chip, or directly into the GPSR, for those that have internal memory). The most I ever had loaded at one time was five different map families.

You have probably noticed that when you have more than one map product loaded on your computer, you switch between maps by selecting the map you want to view with the drop-down menu in the upper left. So, select (using the map selection tool) the map segments you want to load from the first map product, then switch to the second map, and select the segments you want from that map, then switch to the third map, etc.

After you download it all to your GPSR, you may have to go to the 'map detail' page on the GPSR to enable all the different maps. Just remember it is pointless to enable more than one map product for the same geographic area. In other words, if you load CN 8 for the UK, CS 7 for the UK, MG 6 for the UK, and R+R 5 for the UK, and you then enable them all, the GPSR will use the highest quality product (determined by its own internal order of precedence of cartography), and ignore all the rest.

This is what had thrown me, :o as I just hadn't thought of choosing different segments from different drop down map options at the same time, until Armstrong pointed it out.

I assume that as City Navigator V7 doesn't have downloadable maps of Poland, that I wont need to disable it once I cross the border, as the unit will change to the more detailed GPMapa4 automatically (working on the assumption that any downloaded maps takes precedence over the basemap). I have checked how to disable them though - just in case. :D

Thank you all - job well done. :thumb
