I'm thinking of getting a tablet for use at home and away, but would like to be able to run Basecamp & maybe memorymap on it. I'm assuming i could on a windows tablet? Can it be done on android as there are far more tablets to choose from?

You won't get it running on Android. I bought a Linx 10 tablet for running basecamp whilst travelling. It runs full Windows and is surprisingly useable for editing routes in hotel rooms. I'm really pleased with it and think it's great value for money.

Can you rubberband routes on it and do you think the 8" version would be useable?

I've not seen an 8" version but think it would come down to how willing you are to zoom in and lose sight of the overall map. It would probably be more suited to quick fixes than planning a full week's itinerary.

Touch screens don't lend themselves to drag and drop type operations. This is even more so for route planning as your finger/hand obscures quite a lot of the map. I have the Origami cover which has a built in keyboard and trackpad. You could also plug in a USB keyboard/mouse or alternatively use a Bluetooth set.

You can run it on a Surface Pro - but the Surface comes with a pen and, if you want one, a 'type cover' keyboard, making it a bit of a hybrid.

Yep - my Surface Pro 3 is my daily machine. I don't take it travelling though as its extremely expensive compared to the Linx as it's more of a full laptop and much more powerful. The Linx is my traveller as it's much easier to pack on the bike and I'm not as fussed if it gets broken. The pen on the surface though is fantastic.

Have you ran TYRE with this device?

gulp ... Yes, they are expensive, but I bought mine specifically for travelling. Theft risk aside, the metal case and solid state innards make them (supposedly) much more robust than either a standard tablet or a notebook. I'm not intending to let it out of my sight!

I don't blame you. I got mine cheap off a US eBay seller and it still made my eyes water, but then again us Yorkshire folk don't like to spend.

My Surface goes with me for work trips or when I know the risk of damage or lack of luggage space isn't a problem. My Linux goes everywhere else, including my recent multiple stays in hospital. Didn't fancy leaving the Surface unattended while I was under general anaesthetic!

The infinitely adjustable stand on the SP3 is fantastic though. A really simple yet excellent idea.
