I already own a Talex GPS camera detector which I subscribe to. £29 a year.

Not much use for the bike though so I am wondering if putting an overlay on my Quest1 is worth it.

Opinions appear divided on this,

Does anyone have an out of date file I can try prior to subscribing to yet another service?

I'm off to Wales in the car so would have been a good test to run it against the talex as a comparison.

Thanks

Rob

ive got a speed camera map from may 2007 for my quest from pocketgpsworld.com

lmk an email address and i'll send it to you.

it's only £2 for a month in which you'll get at least one update.... are you a student or summat? :D

IMHO the speed camera overlay isn't worth bothering with but I'll let you make your own mind up on that.

what other speed camera map options are available then for the quest?
None, but from trying to use the overlay it's, IMHO, not really safe to keep one eye on the screen for approaching blobs. If you're travelling at the sort of speed where you need to worry about cameras then you need to be fully concentrating on what's going on ahead. You're almost as likely to miss either a potential hazard or, for that matter, an unknown camera site whilst distracted. This is where the audio proximity alert of more recent models works as you get notification through your ear piece without having to take your eyes of the road.

i didnt think there were any other maps available i justed wanted to double check as i dont update my camera maps regularly. you don't really need to keep an eye on the screen all the time as i have my quest gps positioned in my natural field of view in both the car & bike, zoomed in so i can fairly easily notice the blob of the coloured markers of the speed cameras locations on the maps & a glance at the screen every now and then but most of the time just looking out for the cameras themselves by eye when doing higher speeds. i see your point about having a beep though with other gps systems but unfortunately not available for the quest.

Hi, Sorry just been away for the weekend. I thought the camera alerts were £19:blast

Think I have one to test now cheers.

Yes, sound would be better but a blob is better than a poke in the eye - yes you would need to have glanced at the appropriate time but some warning is better than none.

I tend to use the speed reading on my Talex rather than than the speedo as it is more accurate when in a 'danger zone'

As a safety comment, I think having to watch the speedo instead of the road is a danger anyway - the GPS will be closer to the line of sight than the speedo.

My real speeding days are past me now, I find the bigger danger is when you just drive/ride according to road conditions and run the danger of getting caught out by a designed to catch em mobile unit.

Yeah i always thought its a pity the talex doesnt have a headphone socket. I have on in the car and for the price its pretty good. If it had a one i would just stick it in a tankbag or something and use it with an earpiece on the bike.

Might take mine apart and see if i can solder one in
