I have an 1150 that i suspect has done 50k hardish miles (some greenlane), i am tempted to get new shocks although the the cost is high, so ...is it possible to take the springs off my original shocks and get a feel for the damping action to help determine if they are worn? Is a rebuild of the original shock a good idea?

If they weren't damping properly you'd know about it from the handling of the bike. If it feels OK then it probably is OK, unless you're very insensitive to suspension settings/problems.

They can be rebuilt and, other than buying used replacements, it's the cheapest way to refreshed suspension but I wouldn't bother doing it unless they need it.

yes they can be re built, and a new spring fitted.

you need a spring compressor to remove(not spring clamps) as you need to remove the top housing, where you will find a large c clip that needs taking off then it will all come apart.

you cant re build it though, and i think there is only one or two companies who will touch it:nenau

I sent mine to MCT in Stowmarket last year and they tested them, rebuilt the rear shock and sent the front back to be replaced as could not be rebuilt - were very helpful and I spoke to someone who had a GS and knew all about them when I phoned up.
