2009 GS. Filtering between a couple of artics this morning, engine cuts out.

Over to hard shoulder, can't restart engine, select neutral, fires up first time. Tested it since:

Engine running, clutch in, in gear, when the prop stand goes down, engine cuts (as it should)

Starting:
In neutral, prop stand down - starts first hit
ln gear, prop stand down, clutch in - no start (as it should)
In gear, prop stand up, Clutch in - no start (Oh!)

I actually went for a service today (I was on my way there (Orwell in Ipswich)) when it cut out) Mentioned all this to them, but no error codes, no lose connectors etc that they could find.

What next chaps and chapesses?

Faulty clutch switch ? maybe sticking ? take hand guard off & have a shufty that's all it can be

Just a thought have you washed it or been in rain ie:water ingress

Had a similar situation on my RT in the wet two years ago. Thoroughly cleaned up the side stand switch with a solvent and the problem went away - coincidence?

When in gear with your finger on the button with the clutch lever pulled , try moving the clutch lever in and out a bit , mine would catch in a couple of positions and it would start, I ended up replacing the clutch switch on the lever in the end as was very intermittent.

Great idea ?..have the same problem for a while and replaced the clutch switch...not solved .... Tried to bridge the switch and same issue ,,,, sidesstand switch seems to work but never looked at it

If the side stand switch was gone surely it wouldn't run at all or wouldn't cut when the stand was put down?

It was an intermittent problem and like the OP it first showed when filtering on a motorway...

It would fire up straight away and die as soon as i selected a gear.

I gave it a good clean and a soaking of ACF50 and two years down the line it's still fine.

I had a similar issue with the clutch micro-switch. It only revealed itself when the gear position indicator played up and the bike wouldn't start even with the clutch pulled in. The clutch micro switch was clicking but not switching. No amount of squirting and the usual amount of fiddling would get it working. Changed it (making sure I didn't loose the smallest screw in the world!) and the problem solved. It does need to be adjusted which is simple enough to do but does need to be done.

May not be applicable to '09 bikes but early 12's had problems with the brush guards twisting and restricting the lever movement so never fully released. If the CPU doesn't see a change of status on the clutch switch it may default to a safe mode and need you to select neutral.

no sign of any interference, I think the contact cleaner did the job.

While I had the switch off, I noted the following writing on it:

Burgess
V4NCS
T840/T8004-GP

websearch of variants of this info doesn't yield any results that look the same - the GS has a different two pin connector arrangement - so maybe its exclusive to BMW from Burgess? :nenau

However there is burgess switch that looks identical (except connector pins) and the spec for that reads:

Specifications:

Actuator Type Plunger
Contact Configuration SPDT
Contact Current Rating 5 A @ 250 V ac
IP Rating IP67
Maximum Operating Temperature +85°C
Mechanical Life 3 x 10^6Operations
Minimum Operating Temperature -40°C
Operating Force 0.5 N
Release Force 0.1N
Terminal Type Solder

Note Mechanical life of 30,000,000 operations - that's a lot of gear changes!

HEEELP!!!

Engine cutting out when clutch is in. Havi8ng checked the clutch switch is working okay - it now starts in gear, clutch in. I rode about 50 miles yesterday, and at 45 miles, I turned off a main road, changed down a gear, and engine had stopped.

That is potentially fuckin dangerous. What if I had been pulling across traffic, or wanting to pick it up by accelerating out of a bend.

I had a look at the centre stand switch, (took it off for a proper look) it looks fine, and work when tested.

I just don't know what else to look at and check - nothing on the diagnostics, and an intermittent rare event (how many gear changes in 50 miles ? but it did it once). I need to cure this.

Suggestions anyone?

Looks like its an intermittent fault on the sidestand switch. Boo.

Best place to buy a replacement?
