Just come back from a 6 day trip to France with friends - and bloody good it was too. :D

Out of 9 of us, 3 could not use their mobiles abroad. One thought that mobiles phones worked everywhere :blast and 2 thought they had enabled roaming but hadn't. One of those had just signed up to a contract on the strict understanding that he could keep the same number as his old mobile and that he could use it on this trip. As you can imagine, he was a bit pissed off to get to France only to find that it wouldn't work despite the sales assistants guarantees. :( As it happened, we had to contact each other while there and the only way he could do it was to borrow a total strangers mobile.

As I understand it, your service provider (Orange, Vodaphone etc) have to enable roaming for you ie you can't do it yourself. Now given that Orange had told him that they had enabled roaming, is there any way of checking this BEFORE you leave the country, because it's too bloody late when you're over there?

Eg Is there a website that allows you to type in your mobile number and tells you if it's enabled? :nenau

No way of checking it yourself so far as I am aware unless some of the providers show it on your account status on their website but Tmobile doesnt. Should be a case of just calling the company and they can tell you. Most of the companies wont enable roaming until you have been with them for a while 3-6 months so you cant run up huge bills and then do a runner.
