Can you do anything to prevent FPC failure

Cover, what cover

My has never had a cover, should it? perhaps the previous owner ditched it. When the FPC was replaced this morning at Barnstormer they didn't mention it either. I'm confused:confused:

I don't believe water ingress is/was the problem.

The things run too hot.

Now that I've the new, black (which radiates heat better) item fitted, I don't fit the cover... and when washing the bike, take the left tank panel off to have a nosey.

Had my Quality Enhancement letter recently suggestion I get mine changed. Affects only 2007 and early 2008 models of 12GS and GSA.

left out

how can they say that? the problem seems to affect many earlier bikes as well, not just o7/08 bikes.

Sorry to butt in, but:

Anyone who has ever looked at one of the said fuel pump controllers will note that they are "Potted". That is, they are assembled, & then filled with a 2 part epoxy type electicrally insulating, totally waterproof substance.
As a consequence, they will not suffer any damage if submersed indefinitely in water................

I clean my FPC occasionally, just brush with an old paint brush, then apply ACF 50 with the paint brush. After washing the bike I mop out the water that gathers in the FPC 'well'

I dismantled Wapping's dead FPC and found the potting to be "cooked" in places, which had allowed water to get onto the circuit board. This had shorted something out, and the resistor above the 8-pin DIL IC had more or less vanished.

My theory is that the unit does overheat somehow, and the fact that the encapsulation material is probably a poor conductor of heat does not help. After a period of time the encapsulation gets damaged by the heat and no longer provides an adequate seal, most likely around the connector and cables. Water gets in causes some corrosion, the corrosion products go into solution in the water so that it becomes quite conductive, and eventually shorts out something to kill the controller.

i got mine replaced today under the <s>recall</s> "quality enhancement" thing.

got the old one back too. advised to still carry a spare :augie
