I have Castrol power 1 but bike was serviced prior to me buying in August 2017. BMW dealer but don't know which one.
Ideas anyone.

Not another feckin Oil thread.

Yes, my friends,
Oil is Oil. As long as you do not mix up vegetable and mineral, and that's pretty hard to
do in 2018, since Vegetable is so hard to obtain, then just about anything will mix with just about anything else without any ill effects.
And why are you topping it up anyway?
Last year, I set off for Morocco and a 2 week trip.
Did not check the oil before I left, and did not check it throughout the trip.
I do not regularly check the oil level in my car, so why should I do it in my bike?
The car is much more likely to suffer from low level damage than any motorcycle, given that the contents of the sump are subject so surge on cornering, which is not the case in motorcycles. (unless you wheelie!)
Stop obsessing, relax a little.

Cheers for that. just checking as level perfect at present but just bothered if dropped while away for 2 weeks and couple 1000 miles.
Seen others carrying oil and couldn't be bothered with that whilst in Europe , seemed a faff.:rob

Some adventurers think they need to carry extra cans of oil and fuel in Europe, why is anyone's guess. :nenau

It's recommended to check the oil on a BMW boxer engine daily - you may ignore this if you wish, I'm not your mother.

As for topping up oil - find out what they put in your bike. I always use dino oil, and buy some on a trip if I need some (which I often do, after a day or so at high ambient temperatures and high speed - when positioning via motorway, for example). Any oil of the same or similar viscosity rating will do, though...

Castrol Power 1 will be fine - no worries, just don't use that horrid old dinosaur oil that the 850/1100/1150 people are so fond of.

Because their old shitters use oil, and they probably do a lot of offroad, not many petrol stations at the bottom of a valley............
If half a litre of oil in a bottle makes the difference between getting to a garage or other source of oil within Europe or not, maybe its time to rebuild the engine of get a better bike.

If a bike is new to you, then do check the oil on a daily basis as you might find it uses it. The older 1100/1150 engines tended to use oil for the first 20k miles and My Airhead Burns lots of the stuff when on a long trip.

As others have said a long day in the heat at high speeds might result in oil being consumed.

The LCs don’t seem to burn oil, but have lots of other issues instead!

Touratech sell vastly expensive tat to carry the stuff. So why else would anyone carry it.

Mine only uses oil when I top it up. Let it settle to mid sight glass and it never uses a drop.

It’s simple to check so no point stressing about a non problem.
