Quick question is it possible to start in the middle of a route with 2610 without it trying to take you back to the start first? Does that make sense?

Yes.

(well, at least if it works like a Quest)

Just call up the route and tell it to navigate..the unit should direct you to the nearest point on that route and then pick up the actual planned route from there.

The flipside of this being that if you try and route to a spot which is not actually on or very near a road, the GPS throws a complete hissyfit and flails around trying to get you there.

A notorious instance was plotting a route to a 4x4 offroad centre near the M25; the 2610 suggested that I drive past it on the M25, overshoot by 17 miles and u-turn to get on the other carriageway to get optimally close to it.

I then set a route to a small country lane near the site instead, and it plotted a perfectly sensible route to get me there.
