Hi I am still running in my 1200 Adventure and dont feel confident enough to play around with it too much yet. Will it wheelie with just throttle? How does the ASC behave with the font in the air?

r1200gs is a great wheelie bike 1st and 2nd off the throttle, my GSA is not so good, I don,t know why.

I felt the front start to lift in second but wondered if it was just the forks extending. I had to roll off as the engine had hardly done 50 miles at that point. On that note, should I be very gentle running it in? The shop seemed to think not. I have avoided cruising at motorway speeds and have varied the pace and accelleration. Mainly keeping below 5000 but occasionally reaching 7000. Done 300 miles now. What do you think?

If you look at the BBC Long way down website in one of the clips you have Charlie Boorman pulling a wheely on his 1200ADV

Only if you're brave!

My experience is that it will wheelie but there is a lot of weight (and it's not all just mine) and, anlike, say, a Jap parallel 4, it will leap sideways that you have to be ready for - otherwise it can get quite exciting!

except in sport setting where it will briefly allow it - and of course you can turn it off altogether

Snatch the throttle in first and up she comes!! better with a near empty tank though ,but yes an easy bike to wheelie ,keep the back break covered

get some a big blob as a pillion or ratchet a breeze block or two on the back even easier then. don't even have to snatch the throttle just roll it on and it does nice gentle power wheelie.

tank does need to be almost empty as well for maximum effect...

Don't know about wheelies - but regarding running in, just ride it 'normally' using all of the gears on a variety of roads. I think the oil in a new bike is a bit thinner than the stuff they use after the first service. After the first service, rie the knackers off it and fill its lungs

1st gear will roll on wheelie just fine. 2nd doesn't happen. My '05 GS would do both. I'm thinking it's the extra weight up front that's the difference. Both had full Remus with Wunderlich power controller.

i can't help imagining the one little tooth on the drive box pinion lifting all that weight :yikes

I doubt if riding on mixed surfaces grip, no grip etc would be any kinder to the final drive than a well executed wheelie, the transition from accelerating hard to the wheel actually lifting off the ground is very smooth, however if you are clutching it up thats a different kettle of fish of which the final drive is only part of the problem.

Still they ARE meant to be fun:thumb

It's easy. Slip in first and blip the throttle. Don't know what all the fuss is about.
