I've had one of those canbus battery chargers from Nippy Normans for a few months now, and it appears to be working fine, i.e the LED's light up in the correct sequence etc.

I don't use it religiously and have had the odd battery issue.

Yesterday I was talking to a BMW technician and he said they don't work as it is just putting charge into a dead system, and what I should do is put an optimate direct to the battery.

Does anyone know if he is correct?

Can Bus charger

I have been using one like yours for over 5 years on an RT 1200 with original battery. (Just sold RT with original 5 year old battery).
My charger has the BMW logo and part number and think your technician may be wrong as why would BMW market and recommend a charger for the Can Bus system if it did not work.

I never had a flat battery in 5 years so assume it works!
Regards,
Mike

Hi big Bird

I have the very same charger as your picture (BMW kit) thrown in free with my bike purchase.

after each ride i plug it in get green on light then green charged (in time starts red) then no problem as some times I do not ride for 1 to 2 weeks

I think if you ride every day then all is ok :nenau

hope it helps :aidan

Have you tried getting a voltage reading before using the charger, then taking another about an hour later?

Mate, you will be riding you're bike, at least 1.250 km to get you to South of France. Plenty of time to charge the battery...wichever pause you're doing...:augie
Have a safe ride & enjoy the trip :)

Thanks :beerjug:

My wife's 650 CS sits in the garage unused for weeks and always starts first time. It has had a cheap £30.00 battery for three years and has never had a charger attached. You should not need a charger for a bike left for a week or so.
