CanBus.... Can I just connect 12v socket wiring to battery terminals?

Yes. With a suitable fuse. Place the fuse as sensibly close as possible to the battery. Don't forget that the wire (and anything connnected to it) will be permanently live, unless you wire in a switch.

That looks rather useful, where did you mount it?

It was on my Harley fatbob and to be honest, I just cable tied it to the frame in between the battery box, it done its job well, but I reckon it will mount easy on a GS as you can run the cable through and have loads of places you can fix it to on the frame, Harley was limited in space.

If you do not use a switch and leave something plugged into the socket then this will draw current and maybe flatten the battery. A 5V USB charger uses some power even if it is not charging.

On my R1200RS I used a piggy back fuse on one of the 2 fuses under the rider seat to wire in an accessory socket for the cockpit. One fuse is always live, the other is switched with the ignition. I used the latter.

The great thing about this (and lots of similar items) is that YOU can mount them just about anywhere YOU think would be most useful and - dare I say it - easiest to use, either at a standstill or whilst hooning in an awesome manner.

Look at your bike and decide where that might be. Take care, your first choice may not always be your last.
