Has anyone tried connecting the GPS power socket on the CANBUS wiring, as seen here into a SW_Motech powered tank ring...
I would say it's unwise to go this route as the GPS Power Socket is designed for a low current draw i.e. a single GPS device. Connecting a number of 'gadgets' to this power source will either result in the CanBus shutting it down or a blown fuse.
I would use the fused power lead provided with the SW Motech powered tank ring to connect direct to the battery or an aux power distribution box/fuse panel.
You can draw 5 amps from one of the standard 1200 GS BuMW aux sockets. Just how much power does a phone, plus a GPS, plus an iPod, plus a charging camera draw?
Answer: A lot less than 5 amps.
I have charged, simultaneously, all the above, no problem.
According to the blurb on the transformer, my camera, at 100v draws 0.12A and and at 240v draws 0.065. Let's say 1 and a bit amps at 12v.
My phone draws 0.15A at 100v, let's say 1.5A at 12v.
Still not getting close.
Even being cautious you should be well within the limit. This of course assumes you have enough leads to charge all the devices at once, whether you run the supply direct from the battery, or via a separate switched spur.
........but the original question related to the GPS/SatNav power socket not an Aux power socket and I doubt that has the same specs.

I'm one of those 'play safe' guys when it comes to these things - I either want input from a techy/expert type (what is that GPS power circuit rated at?......It wouldn't do too much harm to try it, surely?
) or the knowledge that it's been done and was safe....now back to finding that link you're thinking of!
