Here's a funny one.....

A neighbour's PC will not log onto www.easyjet.com - the problem is that it sees parts of the site as files to download and XP Security Centre says "Unknown File Type" and prompts to Open or Save.

Typical Security Centre window attached (a*se - it won't display - 36KB JPG).

Opens loads of other sites OK.

Run Restore back 2 months to when PC was OK to no avail.

It appears that .asp files have lost their program association (XP has no program to open them with): also other file extensions lost their associations - ".co[1]" whatever that is.

Any and all ideas gratefully received.

One quick workaround is to download another browser and install that. The browser you are using should be able to handle asp stuff natively and if it can't then something is very broken. There's going to be a frigged Registry setting somewhere in the guts...

Grab a copy of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/ and install that to see if the problem goes away when you use that.

There also seems to be a new version of Internet Explorer (tabbed browsing for IE users at last) if your mate would prefer to stay with the MS product.....installing that from the Microsoft downlaod pages should over-write the fault and make that page visible.

Not used it yet meself (FIrefox user here) but it should solve the problem ;)

IE7 is pretty good ... not perfect but its still only a beta...

I have seen a few bug reports from quite a few people but I haven't had a real problem so far ... other than the way it handles pdf files ... I have to open them in a seperate window or it bums out...

Its definalty a step in the right direction and I think that (at the moment) it is far more user friendly than Firefox ... and crashes less than the latest version...

I've given it a go over the last couple of weeks, and as you say, not bad.

I wish it were a bit more flexible though - like being able to put separator lines in your bookmark lists, and filling in your login information when visiting a bookmarked page.

Thanks

Thanks all - would reloading IE6 work? Neighbour isn't a techie so I want a simple solution!

If not, then I'll load IE7 - anyone know how to save it as a .exe file (I have broadband, he's on dial-up - 45K!)?

Cheers

When the download box displays, select "Save As" instead of "Run".

You may find that simply deleting the cookies and temporary internet files will enable the website to display.

Downloading

Steve,

I think the word is "doh!" - I hadn't actually tried to download it when I asked, and it is a simple Save or Run choice!

Centaur,

Tried that, tried Restore too, to no avail.

Many thanks for the advice, all! :thumb

please read all of this and make sure you fully understand it before giving it a go

If you have lost the association with the .asp (active server page) then you may want to re install internet explorer, there are a couple of ways to do this

depending on the version of windows you can go to contro panel add remove programs, then add / remove windows components and select internet explorer PLEASE NOTE that you will need your opearting system CD for this otherwise you will not be able to reinstall internet explorer after you remove it! if you aren't sure then DONT DO IT!

a slower but safer alternatieve is to download internet explorer again from the Microsoft website, just click on the downloads and type the version you are after (5.5 / 6 etc)

once this is done it may be a good idea to run a windows update

open up internet explorer and click tools / windows update

if you are on dialup (not broadband) this could be a VERY lengthy process!

Hope that helps

Thanks

ssbrown19,

Many thanks for that - after playing with their PC for another 1 hour today I was getting really p*ssed off, but eventually came to the same conclusion - reload IE6.

Disks provided with PC (Toshiba laptop that cost £1000) only had IE6 buried in the Recovery CD as .bin

Talk about a b*ggeration, even the CD drive disappeared from Explorer! (Wasn't inserted hard enough - ooh err!).

They are on dial-up, but I'm on broadband and have memory stick - (almost) no wait required.

Thanks for the advice (again) one and all
