First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone.

My 1150 GS (2000, 57k miles) has developed a problem ... I can't change gears from time to time. Both up and down, in various gears etc. Any ideas what's happened? Can I do something myself or is that the CLUTCH HAS GONE :( . If the latter, any ideas how much I'm going to have to fork out?

thanks

Martin

Hi Martin,
Its not the clutch otherwise it would not pull away when
in gear, its prob the the gear linkage just give it a good
clean with wd40 re-oil and add a bit of grease to the
ball joints.
good luck

Gears,

This will be a problem with the gear lever pivot, take of the foot rest assembly and remove the pivot, this is held in by a counter sunk screw and it is TIGHT!. Locktited in here, take it apart and clean, oil and grease it, if you can fit a grease nipple to it and prevent a re-occurance. This happend to me and I thought gear box strip!, aaah dump bike but this is all it was, but this pivot screw is TIGHT.

No need to take the footrest hanger off if you've a Y piece fitted. You only want the lever off -

Leaving the hanger in place will also help support the lever as you undo it. :thumb

If you've still got a cat fitted, you will need to undo the hanger

Hi Martin - I asked the same thing a couple of months ago. The learned ones above are right (again):thumb , its an easy job (just watch you dont loose the tiny spring jobbies that simply pull off). Whole job took under 40 mins - but only because I was going so slow.

A question back to the learned ones  although the problem has gone I still find it a bit sticky at times (especially if left after a wet run). WD 40 does work (and now carried onall journeys!), but for those about to do this clean up what is the best coating of the hidden parts to prevent re-occurance, or is there a spring higher up the system that may need replacing?

How did you clean the pivot pin and bush previously ?

I use mobil synthetic grease on the bush insert.

so just so i dont have 2 ask again a light wipe round the bush, lightly lubed and it just slips in! into gear that is!

sticky gears.

if you are still having a problem if fit a grease nipple this sould cure problems,
the clearence on this shaft is very tight so if you can a slight scrape to the bore with a reamer (expanding would be best). This would give you a bit more clearence and you can then get a good shot of grease in visa the nipple. This is not a job for the unitiated but if you can get it done this will help. My own shaft is so tight it is a job to get a good dollop of grease in
and as soon as I find reamer this will be done.
